New development projects

The Georgian geothermal resources are estimated to be up to 250 Mm3 whereof 100 Mm3 are proven reserves. The water temperature varies from 50 to 100 °C. The theoretical potential has been estimated to be 290 MWh [33], The technical potential is estimated at 150 MWh. Owing to the general economic situation in Georgia and with the poor state of the existing wells it is rather difficult to attract investments for new development projects. That is why the current economic potential is limited to the rehabilitation of existing wells and related infrastructure estimated at 50 MWh. 

Another new development project is the construction of a three dimensional water/air flow model of the fiimace and boiler in order to optimize the construction, dimensions and shape of the process gas line as well as to minimize the formation of build-ups. This work is being carried out in the Flow Laboratory of Outokumpu Research Oy. 

The development and design of new industrial chemical processes occur by applying fundamental scientific principles and a large engineering arsenal of tools. They also require touches of imagination to create a new workable and coordinated whole out of an almost infinite number of concepts, options, and possibilities. A successful new development project ultimately combines technical, economic, market, and timing factors to satisfy the necessary pieces of a commercial puzzle that is often only well-defined after the fact. 

Although the NORSOK concept covers the entire lifecycle the main impact has been on the development and construction phases, see figure 1 below. This new approach created boom activity in the new development projects and in the construction and supply industry activities far beyond their normal capacity. This was followed by a panic reaction the winter 1998/99 resulting in a full stop as a response to a short term oil price of less than 10 per barrel. The price grew fast to 20-30, but in a power-play with the authorities for improved conditions, i.e. reduced safety requirements, the industry used 10-12 as a reference price on oil. 

The role that a host facility plays in an incremental development project can vary tremendously. At one extreme all production and processing support may be provided by the host (such as gas lift and water treatment). On the other hand, the host may just become a means of accessing an export pipeline (if a production and processing facility is installed on the new field). 

At present time, our company is running a development project on the production technology of the MCB type X-ray tubes. The goals of this project are the improvement of the existing technology and making available new tube designs in the near future. 

Each factor is evaluated on the basis of a score of 0—10. A total score of 80 points or higher statistically has resulted in eight or nine successes out of ten instances. Below 80 points, the success-to-failure ratio for new development drops off sharply. Such analyses can be made not only initially but periodically during an R D project and as the business develops. 

Although there are major differences between national educational systems, some broad guidelines for successful science teacher professional development, culled from a review of recent curriculum development projects (Black Atkin, 1996, pp. 146-147 VanDen Akker, 1998, pp. 443 44) can be applied to a revised curricular provision in respect of the triplet relationship.
