The federal government is concerned about the amount of hexachloroethane that you are exposed to in the environment. The government has established standards and guidelines to prevent you from being overexposed. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set a limit of 1 part per million (ppm) for the hexachloroethane in workplace air over an 8-hour workday. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers hexachloroethane as a potential occupational carcinogen (can cause cancer) and recommends 1 ppm in air as a tolerance value. [Pg.25]

The Codex Alimentarius Commission serves as the seminal global reference point for consumers, food producers and processors, national food control agencies and the international food trade. Codex standards and guidelines cover over 200 food commodities and provided the safe limits for over 3000 contaminants and residues. In 1985, UN Resolution 39/248 adopted guidelines advising governments to support and, as far as possible, adopt standards from the Codex. [Pg.3991]

Harmonized CEN Standards are standards based on the guidelines of the Council of Europe. The preparation of these standards was requested by the European Commission from the appropriate CEN committees. These standards are drawn up by the European standards institutions CEN/CENELEC together with the national standards institutions, and are published by the European Commission in the Official Journal of the European Communities as harmonized standards. These standards are then converted into national standards, and are denominated as the Harmonized Standards (e.g. DIN-EN). [Pg.314]

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) serves as the administrator and coordinator of the US private-sector voluntary standardization system. ANSI oversees the creation, promulgation, and use of product specifications, standards, and guidelines that cover a wide variety of American manufactured products. ANSI facilitates the development of American National Standards (ANS) by accrediting the procedures of standards-devel-oping organizations (SDOs). These groups work cooperatively to develop voluntary national consensus standards. Accreditation by ANSI signifies that the procedures used by the standards body in connection with the development of American National Standards meet ANSI s essential requirements for openness, balance, consensus, and due process. [Pg.713]
