As described in an earlier monograph (lARC, 1986), a case-control study in Sweden found a significant association between nasal and nasopharyngeal cancer and exposure to chlorophenols, independent of exposure to wood dust (Hardell et al., 1982). The same group of researchers also reported positive associations with high-grade exposure to chlorophenols in case-control studies of colon cancer (odds ratio, 1.8 95% CI, 0.6-5.3) and primary liver cancer (odds ratio, 2.2 95% CI, 0.7-7.3) (Hardell, 1981 Hardell et al., 1984).

It possessed cytotoxicity for six cell lines (IC50 l 100pg/mL) and antitumor effects on human nasopharyngeal cancer (CNE2, SUNE-1) and human liver cancer (BEL-7402) in nude mice. Recently artesunate has been analyzed for its antitumor activity against 55 cell lines.It was most active against leukemia and colon cancer cell lines. It is notable that no CEM leukemia sublines, which are resistant to either doxorubicin, vincristine, methotrexate, or hydroxyurea, showed cross resistance to artesunate.

Small excess relative risks for buccal cavity and/or pharynx cancer and lung cancer were most consistently observed across these studies. The increases in risk were generally not of statistical significance with the exception of the Blair et al. (1986) report of an SMR of 3.0 (95% CI, 1.3-6.6) for nasopharyngeal cancer.
