Table 5.4 gives the specific energies of selected organic liquid compounds. Compared with the isooctane chosen as the base reference, the variations from one compound to another are relatively small, on the order of 1 to 5%, with the exception of some particular chemical structures such as those of the short chain nitroparaffins (nitromethane, nitroethane, nitropropane) that are found to be energetic . That is why nitromethane, for example, is recommended for very small motors such as model airplanes it was also used in the past for competitive auto racing, for example in the Formula 1 at Le Mans before being forbidden for safety reasons. [Pg.186]

Hexane refers to the straight-chain hydrocarbon, C H branched hydrocarbons of the same formula are isohexanes. Hexanes include the branched compounds, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane, 2,2-dimethylbutane, 2,3-dimethylbutane, and the straight-chain compound, / -hexane. Commercial hexane is a narrow-boiling mixture of these compounds with methylcyclopentane, cyclohexane, and benzene (qv) minor amounts of and hydrocarbons also may be present. Hydrocarbons in commercial hexane are found chiefly in straight-mn gasoline which is produced from cmde oil and natural gas Hquids (see Gasoline AND OTHER MOTOR fuels Gas,natural). Smaller volumes occur in certain petroleum refinery streams. [Pg.405]

Finish removers are manufactured in open or closed ketdes. Closed ketdes are preferred because they prevent solvent loss and exposure to personnel. To reduce air emissions from the solvents, condensers are employed on vent stacks. Mild steel or black iron ketdes are used for neutral or basic removers stainless steel (316 or 317) or reinforced polyethylene ketdes are used for acidic removers. The ketdes are heated to increase dispersion of paraffin waxes and aid in the mixing of other ingredients. Electric or air driven motors drive either sweeping blade or propeller mixers that give sufficient lift to rotate and mix the Hquid. Dispenser-type mixers are used to manufacture thick and viscous removers. Ketde, fittings, mixer, and fill equipment must be fabricated with materials resistant to the chemicals in remover formulas. [Pg.553]

The temperature rises given in the preceding table are based upon a reference ambient temperature of 40°C. Motors intended for use in higher ambient temperatures should have temperature rises not exceeding the value calculated from the appropriate formula, rounded off to the nearest 5 degrees. [Pg.656]

In recent years, a minor component of the atmosphere, ozone, has received a great deal of attention. Ozone, molecular formula O3, is a pale blue gas with a characteristic odor that can be detected after lightning activity, in the vicinity of electric motors, or near a subway train. [Pg.310]

The vast majority of children with enuresis have normal uro-dynamics, including nocturnal bladder capacity. Functional bladder capacity can be estimated using this formula age in years + 2 = ounces of capacity. In some children, there appears to be a relationship between developmental immaturity (motor and language milestones) and enuresis, but the mechanism is unknown. Drugs like lithium, clozapine, risperidone,... [Pg.814]

Wiese Formula An empirical formula developed by General Motors Research for expressing motor fuel antiknock values above 100. This value is obtained by measuring the number of milliliters of tetraethyl lead added per gallon to achieve the same knocking tendency as the fuel being tested. The determined value is then expressed as a performance number. [Pg.357]

Dopaminergic neuromodulatory system. The neurons that synthesize dopamine (structural formula in box) are found in the midbrain, from which they project to the limbic system (the mesolimbic pathway), the cerebral cortex (the mesocortical pathway), as well as to the extrapyramidal motor system (the nigrostriatal pathway). [Pg.42]

Addicts use cocaine intravenously or by snorting the powder. After intravenous injections, coma and respiratory depression can occur rapidly. It has been reported that fatalities associated with snorting usually occur shortly after the abrupt onset of major motor seizures, which may develop within minutes to an hour after several nasal ingestions. Similar results occur if the substance is taken by mouth Treatment is directed toward ventilatory support and control of seizures—although in many instances a victim may not be discovered in time to prevent death. It is interesting to note that cocaine smugglers, who have placed cocaine-filled condoms in their rectum or alimentary tract, have died (Suarez et al.. 1977). The structural formula of cocaine is given in Fig 1. [Pg.50]

If using a JOBO rotary processor it is not possible to use this volume of developer without burning out the motor. The simple remedy is to increase the amount of developing agent in solution. Try adding 30% or more of Solution A than called for by the formula. This will insure that the developing agent is not fully exhausted by the time the process is complete. [Pg.63]

There are other minor nonequivalencies of ISO test procedures compared to ASTM standards, but for color difference the ISO Test Procedure No. 105 is unique. Those who use Colour Measurement Committee (CMC) procedures—particularly CMC 2 1 Lightness to Color ratio—claim that it facilitates a uniform description for acceptability decisions that is better than any other system in existence. These equations permit the use of a single number tolerance, DEcmc, in a nearly uniform color space. The CMC formula is a modification to the perceptibility CIELAB formula. It is fully described elsewhere in this book, but it deserves some brief notice here because, after all, it is an ISO procedure. The CMC developed the basic British Standard No. 6923, Calculation of Small Color Differences. Soon afterward, in 1989, the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) adopted AATCC Test Method 173, CMC Calculation of Small Color Differences for Acceptability. Ford Motor Company indicated a preference for using CMC 2 1 ratio color difference for plastics weathering data for plastics interior trim materials. [Pg.80]

To illustrate the technical content of this formula, two figures (Figs 6.56 and 6.57) are given for 50cps, motors with 2, 4 and 6 (or more) poles and for 60 cps, motors with 2, 4, 6 and 8 (or more) poles. For simplification, the synchronous speed has been given for the maximum rated speed, neglecting the motor s slippage. [Pg.201]
