Morphological techniques

Recent unpublished studies by Boatman and Luchtel (personal communication) in rabbits show that the mucus field is indeed continuous in the medium and smaller airways. Their morphologic techniques are currently being extended to the large airways. Differences in techniques may account for the discrepancy between this work and that of Van As and Webster. Further studies of the structure of the mucus layer in animals are therefore needed to resolve the continuity-discontinuity question. 

Further progress in understanding this effect, as well as others, of the physical structure of cellulose on enzymatic degradation may be expected from combining physicochemical and morphological techniques and from kinetic measurements in heterogeneous enzymatic hydrolysis, applying substrates of well-defined physical structure and isolated components of the enzyme systems.

In the present case after a rough test no major deviations from the ideal DlP/Au model system could be detected but further, more detailed studies using high-resolution electron spectroscopies with synchrotron radiation and additional morphological techniques such as AFM may reveal subtle differences. These will be performed after optimisation of the lift-off technique which is presently under way and will be applied completely under UHV conditions, thus allowing the minimisation of spurious influences. Then further investigations on buried interfaces combining XPS, UPS, IPES, NEXAFS, and AFM will be performed on the present and several other systems which are a matter of present research. 

At present, non-morphologic techniques to evaluate the prognosis of MMs must be regarded as investigational and cannot yet be recommended for routine clinical application. All necessary pathologic data such as tumor location, size, depth, ulceration, mitotic activity, and growth phase can still be obtained by examination of standard microscopic preparations of melanoma as stained with hematoxylin and eosin.

Yang et al. (2013) prepared compatibilized blends of EVAl with maleic anhydride-grafted ethylene-octene copolymer (0-25 wt%). Blends were characterized using mechanical, thermal, ETIR, and morphological techniques.
