The pseudocross-links, generated by the hard-segment interactions, are reversed by heating or dissolution. Without the domain crystallinity, thermoplastic polyurethanes would lack elastic character and be more gum-like in nature. In view of the outlined morphology, it is not surprising that many products develop their ultimate properties only on curing at elevated temperature, which allows the soft- and hard-phase segments to separate. [Pg.344]

Urethane structural adhesives have a morphology that is inverse to the toughened epoxy just described. The urethanes have a rubber continuous phase, with glass transition temperatures of approximately —50°C. This phase is referred to as the .soft segment . Often, a discontinuous plastic phase forms within the soft segment, and that plastic phase may even be partially crystalline. This is referred to as the hard segment . A representation of the morphology is shown in Fig. 3 [34]. [Pg.773]

In hardwoods, morphological structural elements in longitudinal series comprise the segmented structure termed vessel . Vessels, which are exposed in transverse section, constitute about 10-46% of the stem volume in deciduous hardwoods and are cells of relatively large diameters (50-300 p.m). Vessels have in short the appearance of open vertical tubes within the wood structure because their end walls have partially dissolved. By comparison, the hardwood vessel diameter can be as much a 10 times the diameter of a softwood fiber. [Pg.1040]

This behavior of morphology basically occurs with TP, not TS plastics. When TSs are processed, their individual chain segments are strongly bonded together during a chemical reaction that is irreversible. [Pg.340]

While thin polymer films may be very smooth and homogeneous, the chain conformation may be largely distorted due to the influence of the interfaces. Since the size of the polymer molecules is comparable to the film thickness those effects may play a significant role with ultra-thin polymer films. Several recent theoretical treatments are available [136-144,127,128] based on Monte Carlo [137-141,127, 128], molecular dynamics [142], variable density [143], cooperative motion [144], and bond fluctuation [136] model calculations. The distortion of the chain conformation near the interface, the segment orientation distribution, end distribution etc. are calculated as a function of film thickness and distance from the surface. In the limit of two-dimensional systems chains segregate and specific power laws are predicted [136, 137]. In 2D-blends of polymers a particular microdomain morphology may be expected [139]. Experiments on polymers in this area are presently, however, not available on a molecular level. Indications of order on an... [Pg.385]

A variety of morphologies and properties can be achieved with microphase-separated block copolymers. Copolymers of hard and soft polymer segments have... [Pg.6]

Hedrick et al. reported imide aryl ether ketone segmented block copolymers.228 The block copolymers were prepared via a two-step process. Both a bisphenol-A-based amorphous block and a semicrystalline block were prepared from a soluble and amorphous ketimine precursor. The blocks of poly(arylene ether ether ketone) oligomers with Mn range of 6000-12,000 g/mol were coreacted with 4,4,-oxydianiline (ODA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) diethyl ester diacyl chloride in NMP in the presence of A - me thy 1 morphi 1 i nc. Clear films with high moduli by solution casting and followed by curing were obtained. Multiphase morphologies were observed in both cases. [Pg.360]

Synthesis and mechanical and morphological characterization of (AB)n, ABA and BAB type copolymers of m-phenylene-isophthalamide and polydimethylsiloxane have been reported241 242>. The effect of copolymer type, chemical composition and segment molecular weights on phase separation and the solution behavior of these systems have also been discussed. [Pg.39]
