Moisture encapsulants

Flexible foams are used in mattresses, cushions, and safety applications. Rigid and semiflexible foams are used in structural applications and to encapsulate sensitive components to protect them against shock, vibration, and moisture. Foam coatings are tough, hard, flexible, and chemically resistant. [Pg.1022]

Microcapsules are used in several film coatings other than carbonless paper. Encapsulated Hquid crystal formulations coated on polyester film are used to produce a variety of display products including thermometers. Polyester film coated with capsules loaded with leuco dyes analogous to those used in carbonless copy paper is used as a means of measuring line and force pressures (79). Encapsulated deodorants that release their core contents as a function of moisture developed because of sweating represent another commercial appHcation. Microcapsules are incorporated in several cosmetic creams, powders, and cleansing products (80). [Pg.325]

The polymeric encapsulating resin, modified by additives, must possess adequate mechanical strength, adhesion to package components, manufacturing and environmental chemical resistance, electrical resistance, GTE matching, as weU as thermal and moisture resistance in the use-temperature range. [Pg.530]

Thermosetting-encapsulation compounds, based on epoxy resins (qv) or, in some niche appHcations, organosiHcon polymers, are widely used to encase electronic devices. Polyurethanes, polyimides, and polyesters are used to encase modules and hybrids intended for use under low temperature, low humidity conditions. Modified polyimides have the advantages of thermal and moisture stabiHty, low coefficients of thermal expansion, and high material purity. Thermoplastics are rarely used for PEMs, because they are low in purity, requHe unacceptably high temperature and pressure processing conditions. [Pg.530]

Silicon—Ca.rbon Thermoset. The Sycar resins of Hercules are sihcon—carbon thermosets cured through the hydrosilation of sihcon hydride and sihcon vinyl groups with a trace amount of platinum catalyst. The material is a fast-cure system (<15 min at 180°C) and shows low moisture absorption that outperforms conventional thermosets such as polyimides and epoxies. Furthermore, the Sycar material provides excellent mechanical and physical properties used in printed wiring board (PWB) laminates and encapsulants such as flow coatable or glob-top coating of chip-on-board type apphcations. [Pg.189]

Coal Slurries - Two component treatments prove to be effective on a commercial scale for coal slurry flocculation. The use of encapsulated floccuiant suspended in a counter charged floccuiant provides the robusmess of traditional dual component systems, but with additional performance advantages, which include reduction in filter cake moisture content and an increased throughput rate. Figure 5 illustrates the typical filter cake moisture content obtained by a conventional treatment system compared to the encapsulated treatment system using coal tailings as the substrate. [Pg.118]

The control and subproducts for the instrumentation are governed by the general technical requirements for the other subproducts in the system. In addition, to fulfill all the general technical requirements, the encapsulation and protection of the environments in which the subproducts are used have to be considered, including danger of explosion, pollution, moisture, temperature, vibration, influence on heating and cooling, etc. See (Table 9.7). [Pg.774]

PPV and its alkoxy derivatives are /j-type conductors and, as a consequence, hole injection is more facile than electron injection in these materials. Efficient injection of both types of charge is a prerequisite for efficient LED operation. One approach to lowering the barrier for electron injection is the use of a low work function metal such as calcium. Encapsulation is necessary in this instance, however, as calcium is degraded by oxygen and moisture. An alternative approach is to match the LUMO of the polymer to the work function of the cathode. The use of copolymers may serve to redress this issue. [Pg.335]

The problem of permeability exists whenever a plastic material is exposed to vapor, moisture, or liquids. Typical cases are electrical batteries, instruments, components installed underground, encapsulated electrical components, food packaging, and various fluid-material containers. In these cases, a plastic material is called upon to form a barrier either to minimize loss of vapor or fluid or to prevent the entrance of vapor or fluid into a product. From the designers viewpoint, the tolerable amount of permeation established by test under conditions of usage with a prototype product of correct shape and material is the only direct answer. [Pg.308]

Plasma gasification is a generic-type process that can accommodate virtually any input waste material in as-received condition, including liquids, gases, and solids in any form or combination. Also, moisture content is not a problem. Liquids, gases, and small particle-size waste materials are very easily and efficiently processed. Bulky items, such as household appliances, tires, and bedsprings, can also be readily accommodated without loss of destruction efficiency. The reactor vessel and waste feed mechanism are designed for the physical characteristics of the input waste stream. Even waste materials such as low-level radioactive waste can be processed to reduce the bulk and encapsulate the radioactive constituents to reduce leachability. [Pg.161]

Figure 7.20 depicts the Leclanchd cell in schematic form. The zinc can is generally coated with plastic for encapsulation (i.e. to prevent it from splitting) and to stop the intrusion of moisture. Plastic is an insulator, and so we place a conductive cap of stainless steel at the base of the cell to conduct away the electrons originating from the dissolution of the zinc from the inside of the can. A carbon rod then acts as an inert electrode to conduct electrons away from the reduction of Mn02 at the cathode. The reaction at the cathode is given by... [Pg.346]

As adhesives they are very widely used both as cold setting and thermo curing. They can bond together a large variety of surfaces including metals. Araldite resins of this type are used widely in aircraft construction. They are also used for bonding concrete in dams and joining teflon film to stainless steel. They are used to encapsulate delineate electrical parts to protect them from shock and moisture. Such parts are used in components of rockets and satellites. [Pg.174]

These samples demonstrated exceptional durability regardless of surface preparation, due to the moisture resistant chemical and physical interlocking of the paint/adhesive interface. In addition, the zinc particles within the paint are encapsulated by the organic resin. Since few, if any, metal oxide sites are available for hydrolysis by moisture at the interface, more durable joints are the end result. [Pg.191]

Dust control is a major problem in corrosion control by silicone polymers. Dust particles which may bridge, or meerly lay upon conductors will absorb moisture diffusing through the silicone and result in a localized site of corrosion. We found this to be the case in a number of our early saunples. Following the results of this study, all of our encapsulated assemblies will be cleaned and encapsulated in a clean room which is serviced by HEPA filters. [Pg.311]

Microencapsulation means the envelopment of liquid droplets or solid particles with natural or synthetic polymers. The encapsulation of a substance with a polymer membrane is undertaken for various reasons, for example, as protection against moisture, or to obtain delayed dissolution of fertilizers, herbicides, or drugs by microencapsulation with semipermeable membranes. [Pg.295]

Of all the commercially available organic and inorganic polymeric materials, RTV silicone elastomer has proved to he one of the most effective encapsulants used for mechanical and moisture protection of the Integrated Circuitry (1C) devices. A general overview of the RTV silicone elastomer and its commercial preparation and cure mechanism are described. Improved electrical performance of the RTV silicone encapsulant, by immobilizing the contaminant ions, such as Na, K" , Cl , with the addition of the heterocyclic poly-ethers as the contaminant ion scavengers seems to have a potential application as the contaminant ionic migration preventor in the electronic applications. [Pg.171]

This project placed encapsulated spent fuel elements from an experimental AEG reactor into storage holes drilled into the floor of the mine located in a salt bed. Valuable experimental information was obtained about the interaction between the waste form and the salt in which the waste was emplaced. It was in fact this experiment, conducted in 1968, which revealed that inclusions of moisture, or brine, in the salt beds have a tendency to migrate up a thermal gradient towards a heat source placed in the salt. Quantities of brine were measured as migrating to the deposited waste canisters and the interaction of this brine with the canis-tered material was observed. [Pg.3]

Operating temperatures on shelf-life, while eliminating the effect of other variables (such as encapsulating agent, solids concentration, and powder moisture content) on shelf-life. [Pg.79]
