Experimental Results for Mixed Wastewater Samples After Neutralization and Separation... [Pg.1200]

Wastewater characteristics must be known in order to select a suitable treatment system. For this purpose, the wastewater samples taken from the sources were analyzed to determine various parameters. Also, the quantities of chemicals (NaOH) required for neutralization and settling characteristics were determined. These were made separately for continuous and batch discharges. Since the system is to be designed according to the continuous discharge of wastewaters from the batch system to the treatment plant, mixed wastewater was prepared in quantities proportional to the flow rates. The quantity of NaOH required for lOOOmL of mixed wastewater is shown in Table 28.2.13... [Pg.1197]

ATP measured by luciferin-luciferase BL assay was used to examine the effect of toxic substances on whole microbial communities in activated sludge mixed liquid samples [114], It was used to detect whether wastewater had an effect on the biodegradation capability of the resident population of microorganisms. Actually ATP BL represents an important rapid toxicity test that utilizes waste treatment natural microorganisms to determine the toxicity of wastes discharged to the sewer [132],... [Pg.259]

Wang and Yuan [13] applied leucomethylene blue reagent for the determination of chlorine dioxide disinfectant residues in drinking water and wastewater samples. In their method, the sample is mixed with 3 cm reagent solution (20 mg/dm ), filled up to 20 cm, and extracted with 1,2-dichloroethane at pH 1.3. After a reaction time of 10 min the absorbance is measured at 658 nm. The interfering chlorine and h5q30chlorite ions can be masked by adding oxalic acid. [Pg.171]

The environmental sampling of waters and wastewaters provides a good illustration of many of the methods used to sample solutions. The chemical composition of surface waters, such as streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans, is influenced by flow rate and depth. Rapidly flowing shallow streams and rivers, and shallow (<5 m) lakes are usually well mixed and show little stratification with... [Pg.193]

Natural clay samples were heated from 110°C to 900°C for 1 hour to obtain thermal achvated clay samples. Then samples put in a desiccator containing dried silica gel. Adsorphon experiments were carried out in a cylindrical vessel (2.4 L). The constant inihal concentrations of 800-920 mg/L of engine oil (SAE 40) were dispersed in 250 mL drinking water by stirring for 5 minutes (synthehcally wastewater). Mixing... [Pg.206]

Elemental composition Cr 52.00%, 0 48.00%. The compound may he identified from its dark red color. Other color phases are noted above. Chromium may he measured in the aqueous phase hy AA, ICP or x-ray techniques, or in the solid phase hy x-ray methods. Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) may he analyzed hy ion chromatography. For this, the aqueous sample is adjusted to pH 9 to 9.5 with a concentrated buffer (ammonium sulfate and ammonium hydroxide mixture) and mixed into the eluent stream of the buffer. Cr " is separated from Cr + on a column, and derivatized with an azide dye as a colored product measured at 530 nm, which is identified from its retention time. (APHA, AWWA, and WEF. 1999. Standard Methods for The Examination of Water and Wastewater, 20th ed., Washington, DC American Public Health Association.)... [Pg.228]

Portland cement and Portland cement with 30% fly ash were used as matrix. Chemical composition, physico-chemical and mechanical properties of cements were determined. The samples lx 1x6 cm were prepared by mixing cement with wastewater containing 10,000 mg F1 Pb2+, 30,000 mg F1 Pb2+, and 50,000 mg F1 Cd2+. The next samples were prepared ... [Pg.177]

The deconvolution methods are multi-wavelength procedures which can be classified with regard to the selection procedure of reference spectra. These spectra can be chosen from specific compounds (Maier, 1981), from independent spectra of real samples (Thomas et al., 1993), statistically selected (Gallot and Thomas, 1993) or from a mixed choice of spectra of specific compounds and of real samples. Reference spectra are not universal recently, according to the complexity of the composition of wastewater, SECOMAM has developed UVPro software based on advanced UV spectral deconvolution (Patent 00402038-4, 17 July 2000) which allows creating dedicated models and determination of reference spectra from a set of studied water and wastewater UV spectra an automatic calibration step is carried using parameters values obtained by standard or reference method. Deconvolution is used in order to find a linear relation between measured and UV estimated values for any parameter. [Pg.92]
