Misuse potential

Diabetic patients Weight-loss induction by orlistat may be accompanied by improved metabolic control in diabetic patients, which might require a reduction in dose of oral hypoglycemic medication (eg, sulfonylureas, metformin) or insulin. Although barbiturates are not currently used for the treatment of anxiety because of the abuse and misuse potential, they are prescribed for epilepsy and other convulsive conditions as well as for the treatment of colitis and tension headache. The threat of accidental misuse of quaternary ammonium compounds coupled with potential harmful effects to sensitive species of fish and invertebrates has prompted some concern. Industry has responded with an effort to replace the questionable compounds with those of a more environmentally friendly nature. Newer classes of quaternaries, eg, esters (206) and betaine esters (207), have been developed. These materials are more readily biodegraded. The mechanisms of antimicrobial activity and hydrolysis of these compounds have been studied (207). AppHcations as surface disinfectants, antimicrobials, and in vitro microbiocidals have also been reported. Examples of ester-type quaternaries are shown in Figure 1. 

Marks registered only under prior trademark acts are subject to cancellation proceedings at any time at the initiative of someone who claims damage or potential damage by the registration of the mark. Certification marks can be similarly canceled if the owner fails to exercise control over their use or misuses them (8). 

In the event of accident or gross misuse of products, various health hazards could arise. The data provided by the supplier should outline these potential hazards and the simple precautions that can be taken to minimize them. Guidance should be included on the remedial action that should be taken to deal with medical conditions that might arise. Advice should be obtained from the supplier before petroleum products are used in any way other than as directed. 

Quite a few NSAlDs are available as OTC products. OTCformulations such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, and Nuprin), ketoprofen (Orudis), and naproxen sodium (Aleve) are available to any consumer. The potential for misuse and abuse is high, especially when one is confronted by the large number of advertisements on television and in print heralding the wonderful benefits of these products. 

I he gastrointestinal (GI) tract is subject to more diseases and disorders than any other system of the body. Some drugs used for GI disorders are available as nonprescription drug, thereby creating the potential problems of misuse and overuse of the drugp and the disguising of more serious medical problems. 

Additionally, color may also serve as a key to cataloging a food as safe. Undesirable colors of meats, fruits, and vegetables warn us about potential dangers or at least of the presence of undesirable flavors. Color and other sensory attributes are even misused as indicators for safety. Walker and co-authors demonstrated that in small and medium enterprises, more than 50% of food handlers thought that they could tell whether food was contaminated with food poisoning bacteria by sight, smell, and taste. Color is thus used as a way to identify a food and judge its quality."... 

Despite public misconceptions, there is little firm evidence that the typical and atypical antidepressants produce dependence in clinical users. A review of 21 case reports of antidepressant addiction revealed that 12 were associated with tranylcypromine, although 8 of these 12 had a previous history of substance misuse (Haddad, 1999). Tranylcypromine s structural similarity to amphetamine may account for the significant number of reports of its addictive potential, but even here the term (mild) discontinuation reaction rather than withdrawal reaction should be used to allay any concerns patients might have (Haddad, 1999). 

To the Editor I should like to reply to Dr. Thomas Perry s letter published June 18, 1970. Dr. Perry s objections are well intentioned there is no doubt. He is concerned about our inappropriate and immoral national policies. He is concerned about potential misuse of scientific information for purposes other than the good of mankind. How can anyone disagree Yet his approach will not serve to implement any real change in the basis for these concerns. If we contemplate changing the course of our nation, must we not direct our efforts toward those capable of seeing that a change takes place ... 

Both courts and police investigators need to be able to understand the potential effects of a particular explosive or explosive device and to be able to set it into its proper context. For example was this a mere firework being misused by a naughty schoolboy, or a weapon of mass destruction That is not, of course, to forget that devices illegally constructed from fireworks can cause horrific injuries.
