Certification marks

Marks registered only under prior trademark acts are subject to cancellation proceedings at any time at the initiative of someone who claims damage or potential damage by the registration of the mark. Certification marks can be similarly canceled if the owner fails to exercise control over their use or misuses them (8).

The NF Environnement mark was created in 1991 it is a French ecological certification for Association frangaise de normalization (AFNOR). Products having this label have a reduced effect on the environment and also equivalent performance properties. It is a collective certification mark that certifies the quality and safety of the products and services (Url-24). 

The Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is a nonprofit organization that performs product safety tests and certifications. Founded in 1894, today Underwriters Laboratories has laboratories in the United States, England, Detunark, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan. Its certification mark is one of the most recognizable marks on products.

A recognition title of an individual awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) based on the individual s knowledge and experience as demonstrated to the board by the individual s application documentation and an examination based on safety fundamentals and/or comprehensive practice. Knowledge is demonstrated by educational degree accepted by the board and experience by demonstrated acceptable professional safety practice. Certified Safety Professional and CSP are registered certification marks awarded to BCSP by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. See also Board of Certified Safety Professionals. 

There is no licensing for many professions. The main reason is that they do not provide services directly to the public. In order to gain recognition and credibUity, many professions in the United States have set up certification. Practitioners must qualify and pass one or more examinations related to practice to become certified. The process is almost the same as for licensing. Certification marks a level of professionalism and competency for those who achieve it. Certification does not prevent anyone from practicing.
