Minimization definition

A short discussion of the minimal definition of life, on Earth and elsewhere. [Pg.39]

The EF algoritlnn [ ] is based on the work of Cerjan and Miller [ ] and, in particular, Simons and coworkers [70,1Y. It is closely related to the augmented Hessian (rational fiinction) approach[25]. We have seen in section B3.5.2.5 that this is equivalent to addmg a constant level shift (damping factor) to the diagonal elements of the approximate Hessian H. An appropriate level shift effectively makes the Hessian positive definite, suitable for minimization. [Pg.2351]

This makes it desirable to define other representations in addition to the electronically adiabatic one [Eqs. (9)-(12)], in which the adiabatic electronic wave function basis set used in the Bom-Huang expansion (12) is replaced by another basis set of functions of the electronic coordinates. Such a different electronic basis set can be chosen so as to minimize the above mentioned gradient term. This term can initially be neglected in the solution of the / -electionic-state nuclear motion Schrodinger equation and reintroduced later using perturbative or other methods, if desired. This new basis set of electronic wave functions can also be made to depend parametrically, like their adiabatic counterparts, on the internal nuclear coordinates q that were defined after Eq. (8). This new electronic basis set is henceforth refened to as diabatic and, as is obvious, leads to an electronically diabatic representation that is not unique unlike the adiabatic one, which is unique by definition. [Pg.188]

Type metal, another tin—antimony—lead alloy, is used primarily in reHef or letterpress printing. Antimony is added to increase hardness, minimize shrinkage, permit sharp definition, and reduce the melting point of the alloy. There has been a substantial decrease in the use of type metals as a result of the emergence of less expensive typesetting techniques. [Pg.198]

To avoid confusion, several researchers have incorporated therapeutic intention into the definition of controlled release (4—7). Thus, controUed-release pharmaceuticals release dmgs in vivo according to a predictable, therapeutically rational, programmed rate to achieve the optimal dmg concentration in the minimal time (4). Specification by release rate complements specification by quantity jointly considered, they fix the duration of dmg release. Therefore, the dmg s duration of action can become a design property of a controlled release dosage form rather than an inherent pharmacokinetic property of the dmg molecule. [Pg.140]

This particular technique is suitable only for laboratoiy investigation using tanks that are transparent and well illuminated. It does not lend itself to evaluation of the opaque tanks, nor is it used in any study of large-scale tanks in the field. It is a very minimal requirement for uniformity, and definitions suggested earlier are recommended for use in industrial design. [Pg.1633]

Although the EPAs policy does not consider recycling or treatment as actual pollution prevention methods per se, these methods present an opportunity to reduce the amount of waste that might otheiwise be discharged into the environment. Clearly, the definition of pollution prevention and its synonyms (e.g., waste minimization) must be understood to fully appreciate and apply these techniques. [Pg.2164]

Waste minimization generally considers all of the methods in the EPA hierarchy (except for disposal) appropriate to reduce the volume or quantity of waste requiring dispos (i.e., source reduction). The definition oi source reduction as applied in the Pollution Prevention Act, however, is any practice that reduces the amount of any hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant entering any waste stream... [Pg.2164]

Before setting about the task of developing such a model, the product development process requires definition along with an indication of its key stages, this is so the appropriate tools and techniques can be applied (Booker et al., 1997). In the approach presented here in Figure 5.11, the product development phases are activities generally defined in the automotive industry (Clark and Fujimoto, 1991). QFD Phase 1 is used to understand and quantify the importance of customer needs and requirements, and to support the definition of product and process requirements. The FMEA process is used to explore any potential failure modes, their likely Occurrence, Severity and Detectability. DFA/DFM techniques are used to minimize part count, facilitate ease of assembly and project component manufacturing and assembly costs, and are primarily aimed at cost reduction. [Pg.266]

To reiterate the definition of chromatographic resolution a separation is achieved in a chromatographic system by moving the peaks apart and by constraining the peak dispersion so that the individual peaks can be eluted discretely. Thus, even if the column succeeds in meeting this criterion, the separation can still be destroyed if the peaks are dispersed in parts of the apparatus other than the column. It follows that extra-column dispersion must be controlled and minimized to ensure that the full performance of the column is realized. [Pg.287]

Several definitions of pollution prevention can be found in the literature (e.g., El-Halwagi and Petrides, 1995 Freeman, 1995 Theodore et al, 1994 Noyes, 1993). These definitions vary in the scope of pollution prevention. Throughout this book, the term pollution prevention will be used to describe any activity that is aimed at reducing, to the extent feasible, the release of undesirable substances to the environment. Other terms such as waste minimization, reduction, and management will be used interchangeably as synonyms for pollution prevention. [Pg.2]

By the definition, a minimal cutset is the collection of those events that produce the top event (no extras), although there may be many different collections. The combination is the smallest unique collection of components which if they all failed, produce the top event. If any components in the cutset do not fail then the top event will not oecur - at least by that cutset. [Pg.103]

The prescription proposed in the original Meister-Kroll-Groot [138,139] theory for hard spheres requires the determination of the local density and the averaged density as two independent variational variables by minimizing the grand potential with respect to these variables. The modification introduced by Rickayzen et al. [143,144] arises from another definition of the average density... [Pg.215]

Definition of Responsibilities Facility personnel understand their roles and responsibilities in achieving the desired level of PSM performance. Appropriate checks and balances have been establish to minimize confiicts of interest. Internai coordination and communication mechanisms exist. [Pg.78]
