Miniaturization, advantages

The advantages of miniaturization are now being exploited in areas beyond microelectronics. Adaptation of materials and processes originally devised for semiconductor manufacture has allowed fabrication of sensors (for example, pressure meters and accelerometers used in the automotive industry) (6,7), complex optical (8) and micromechanical (6,7,9) assembHes, and devices for medical diagnostics (6,7,10) using Hthographic resists. [Pg.113]

Dry Lubricant. The static and dynamic coefficients of friction for the parylenes are low and virtually the same. This feature is an advantage in the use of a parylene coating as a dry lubricant on the bearing surfaces of miniature stepping motors. Coating a threaded ferrite core significantly reduces the abrasion to coil forms (82). [Pg.443]

Miniaturization is a growing trend in the field of analytical chemistry. The miniaturization of working electrodes not only has obvious practical advantages, but also opens some fundamentally new possibilities (77-79). The term microelectrode is reserved here for electrodes with at least one dimension not greater than 25 pm. [Pg.128]

Such sensors utilizing solid-state electronics have significant advantages. The actual sensing area is very small. Hence, a single miniaturized solid-state chip could contain multiple gates and be used to sense several ions simultaneously. Other advantages include the in-situ impedance transformation and the ability for temperature and noise compensation. While the concept of the ISFET is very... [Pg.191]

Another advantage of the micro-LC approach is that the required sample size is minimal, so the sample can be drawn from a 1-1 laboratory scale reactor without influencing the reactor composition. The ISCO pLC-500 microflow syringe pump has proven to be reliable and reproducible in evaluations in our laboratory. Capillary liquid columns have been fabricated on planar devices such as silicon to form a miniaturized separation device.19... [Pg.92]

Miniaturized columns have provided a decisive advantage in speed. Uracil, phenol, and benzyl alcohol were separated in 20 seconds by CEC in an 18 mm column with a propyl reversed phase.29 A19 cm electrophoretic channel was etched into a glass wafer, filled with a y-cyclodextrin buffer, and used to resolve chiral amino acids from a meteorite in 4 minutes.30 A 6 cm channel equipped with a syringe pump to automate sample derivatization was used to separate amino acids modified with fluorescein isothiocyanate.31 Nanovials have been used to perform tryptic digests on the 15 nL scale for subsequent separation on capillary Electrophoresis.32 A microcolumn has also been used to generate fractions representing time-points of digestion from a 40 pL sample.33 A disposable nanoelectrospray emitter has been... [Pg.429]

Another advantage of this system is that sections of transparent pipe may easily be fixed in the upright arms of the T-joints, enclosing the plants in a miniature "greenhouse" and allowing collection of volatiles from the plants. [Pg.220]
