For those instances where a simple GUI with sliders and buttons is helpful, we use Tcl/Tk (which is freely distributed for all the supported TooIKit platforms). In the last decades several branches of CNRS became involved in peptide research for instance, in Orleans (Y. Trudelle), in Marseille (J. van Rietschoten, synthesis of scorpion toxins), in Paris (C. Durieux, conformation of cholecy-stokinin) in Gif sur Ivette (S. Fermandjian, peptide architecture studies via CD spectra), and last, but not least, in Montpellier where Jean Martinez achieved considerable success in the study of gastrointestinal hormones. Early computer software used to play music yms limited to WAV (binary waveform audio file format) and textual MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) files and, while interesting, was not widely used. Better file formats, in particular, MP3 (MPEG-1 audio layer 3) files, have produced high-quality reproductions that are small enough to download and store easily, and this has greatly increased audio player software. Files are the most basic unit a typical computer user works with. Files could be text documents (. txt), pictures (. bmp), or songs (. mp3). Media files (see Figure 2.1) are just files that contain audio, video, digital music, or pictures. In the context of ACID, media files that can be used are video, audio, or MIDI in nature. Audio files are paramount, however (see Figure 2.1). Some typical file formats for audio that can be used in ACID are. wav or. mp3. [Pg.24]

MIDI and video files are obviously not proper loops and, therefore, will not be referred to as such in this book. As important media components of ACID, each has a chapter devoted to it later, but they will be ignored for now. Instead, the rest of this chapter is going to discuss audio files, which might all be called loops, whether they loop or not. The most popular format for audio files used as loops is the Windows. wav file format. To Windows or another audio application, the. wav files that go into an ACID project all look the same. That is to say, although ACID has three different types of audio tracks and thus three different kinds of audio loops, Windows sees these as all the same. The information that ACID uses to separate these types is proprietary to ACID. [Pg.178]

As you have noticed, configuring and generating MIDI Clock is a similar process. As with MTC, you will need to select an output device, but MIDI Clock is measured in terms of tempo, measures, and beats, so it is not necessary to select a format. MIDI Clock can be generated by a shared device used for playback. [Pg.221]

The Generate MIDI llmecode settings option sets up ACID to send MTC to another application to allow ACID to trigger that application. The Output device allows you to select the hardware and software combination used to generate MTC. Only devices that are not selected on the MIDI tab are available. The Frame rate determines the format of the MTC and needs to be matched in the receiving application. [Pg.285]

The Trigger from MIDI Timecode settings allows ACID to listen for and respond to MTC as sent from another application. The Input device sets the hardware and software driver that ACID will listen to, and the Frame rate sets the format of the MTC and needs to be matched to the sending application. [Pg.285]
