Combining informativeness and accuracy with readability, Stephanie Yanchinski explores the hopes, fears and, more importantly, the realities of biotechnology - the science of using micro-organisms to manufacture chemicals, drugs, fuel and food. [Pg.442]

The mode of action has not yet been elucidated but the manufacturer states that it probably behaves like the herbicide triflurolin and its congeners. These materials inhibit cell division by binding to tubuHn thereby internipting micro-tubule development. This, in turn, stops spindle fiber formation essential to mitosis and cell division. Experiments with C-labeled Prime+ show that it is acutely toxic to fish with estimated LC q (96 h) of less than 100 ppb for rainbow trout and bluegiU. sunfish. However, channel catfish did not exhibit any toxic response at the maximum attainable water concentration (10). [Pg.425]

A proprietary form of Caro s acid is sold to the electronics iadustry under the trade name Nanostrip. Used for reclaiming defective siHcon wafers, it is manufactured by Cyantech (United States), Micro-Image Technology (UK), and RASA Industries (Japan). [Pg.95]

Because C-curves are determined by quench-hold-quench sequences they can, strictly speaking, only be used to predict the micro structures that would be produced in a steel subjected to a quench-hold-quench heat treatment. But the curves do give a pretty good indication of the structures to expect in a steel that has been cooled eontinuously. For really accurate predictions, however, eontinuous eooling diagrams are available (see the literature of the major steel manufacturers). [Pg.123]

Micro-scaling or bottom up approach to quality costs, where it is possible to calculate the cost of losses involved in manufacture and due to returns and/or claims. This method requires a great deal of experience and relies on the availability of detailed cost data throughout a product s life-cycle. While this is a crucial activity for a business, it is also not a practical approach for estimating the quality cost for product in the early stages of product development. [Pg.14]

Applications Although a wide range of metals can be sputtered, the method is often commercially restricted by the low rate of deposition. Applications include the coating of insulating surfaces, e.g. of crystal vibrators, to render them electrically conducting, and the manufacture of some selenium rectifiers. The micro-electronics industry now makes considerable use of sputtering in the production of thin-film resistors and capacitors . ... [Pg.442]

Electric road vehicles have been reduced to insignificance, as mentioned already by, vehicles with combustion engines. Another electric vehicle — the electrically driven submarine — presented a continuous challenge to lead-acid battery separator development since the 1930s and 1940s. The wood veneers originally used in electric vehicles proved too difficult to handle, especially if tall cells had to be manufactured. Therefore much intense effort took place to develop the first plastic separators. In this respect the microporous hard rubber separator, still available today in a more advanced version, and a micro-porous PVC separator (Porvic I) merit special mention 28]. For the latter a molten blend of PVC, plasticizer and starch was rolled into a flat product. In a lengthy pro-... [Pg.256]

We have designed, manufactured and tested a prototype that may be applied in thermal control of electronic devices. It was fabricated from a silicon substrate and a Pyrex cover, serving as both an insulator and a window through which flow patterns and boiling phenomena could be observed. A number of parallel triangular micro-channels were etched in the substrate. The heat transferred from the device was simulated by different types of electrical heaters that provided uniform and non-uniform heat fluxes, defined here respectively as constant and non-constant values... [Pg.76]

Another type of linear configuration known as bow-tie is shown in Figure 10.10. The actuator is constmcted using dielectric elastomer film having the shape of a bow-tie with two compliant electrodes configured on its two surfaces. Application of the electric field results in planar actuation which because of the bow-tie shape is translated into linear motion. Typical applications of these types of actuators comprise a hexapod robot, to mimic the motion of insects like walking, to manufacture various animated devices like face, eyes, skin, etc., or the design of micro-air vehicle/omithopter. [Pg.286]

By the use of microstructured mixers, pigment and other particulate syntheses can be improved. In this way, finer particles with more uniform size distribution were yielded for the commercial azo pigment Yellow 12 (see Fig. 2) [11]. The particles formed in the microstructured mixer have better optical properties such as the glossiness or transparency at similar tinctorial power. Since the micro-mixer made pigments have more intense colour, lower contents of the costly raw material in the commercial dye products can now be employed which increases the profitability of the pigment manufacture. [Pg.32]
