PMT assays were performed as described by Vannier et al. [3] by adding an equal volume of an enzyme preparation to a 0.1 M Tris-HCl buffer containing 3.36 pM of [ C]SAM (1.8 GBq mmol, 740 kBq ml", NEN), 1% (WA ) BSA and 12% sucrose, with or without 0.2% pectic acceptor. The incubation was run at 28°C for 12 h. After precipitation of the reaction product in 70% ethanol, the methylated polymers were selectively extracted with 0.5% ammonium oxalate and radioactivity was measured in a Tricarb 2250 CA Packard scintillation counter. [Pg.712]

Our results suggest that in the cases of benzylated and hydroxylated polymers the biradical intermediates are stabilized by the phenyl and hydroxy group, resulting in a longer life for the intermediates. As a result, crosslinking becomes the favorable process. In the cases of the unsubstituted and the methylated polymers the short-lived biradicals lack such stabilization and the unimolcular fragmentation becomes the favorable process. [Pg.304]

As with most of the synthetic polysaccharides, complete methylation189 of the polyxylose was difficult. The fully methylated polymer was soluble in petroleum ether (30-60°) containing 6% of chloroform. Hydrolysis of the methylated xylan gave tri-, di-, and mono-O-methyl-D-xyloses, together with D-xylose, in the molar ratio of 31 33 19 5. The tri-O-methyl-D-xylose fraction contained 38% of 2,3,5-tri-O-methyl-D-xylose, the remainder being the 2,3,4-trimethyl ether. The dimethyl ethers included the 2,5-,... [Pg.474]

Silicon (Si) is the most abundant element in our environment it constitutes 26% of the earth s crust. From the toxicological viewpoint, several forms of Si are of interest, including amorphous oxides of Si (e.g., asbestos) and methylated polymers of Si (e.g., silicone). [Pg.1384]

For most of the unbranched alkyl substituted polymers, in solvents of high refractive index, the smooth transition described by the above model changes to an abrupt, first order like transition (8). This has been described in terms of electronic-conformational coupling ( n ). The thermochromism for the n-propyl methyl polymer is summarized in Figure for two solvents. [Pg.487]

The results obtained here confirm their findings, and extend them by showing that even a small percent of N-methylation is sufficient to change the hydrodynamic properties of the para-linked aromatic polyamide molecule. The agreement between the molecular weights measured for polymer 7 (50% N-methyl substitutive) in 96% sulfuric acid and the N-methyl pyrrolidone with 5% LiCl and 1% water implies that this polymer forms a molecularly disperse solution in the latter solvent. This observation differs significantly from the report by Tsvetkov et al. (6) and Koton and Nozova (5) that the fully methylated polymer only formed molecularly disperse solutions in sulfuric acid. [Pg.358]

The methylated polymer is isolated and hydrolyzed, and the partially methylated monomers are characterized. Originally these derivatives were separated by partition chromatography on paper (Binkley, 1955), but this requires a relatively large amount of material. Subsequently the methylated monomers were separated by GLC as their methyl glycosides (Bishop, 1964), trimethylsilyl derivatives (Petersson and Samuelson,... [Pg.88]

Methylation analysis. Peptidophosphogalactomannan and its degradation products were quantitatively methylated and the methylated polymers were converted to their permethylated alditol acetates in an attempt to determine the types of linkages in the polymer. The permethylated alditol acetates were separated and quantified by gas-liquid chromatography and they were identified by their fragmentation patterns in a mass spectrometer. [Pg.57]

It was Interesting that stability in air ( ) indicated that for the all methylated polymers, POMS was more oxidatively stable than the carboranes (e.g. about 350 C vs 280 to 300 C). [Pg.120]
