The power of the immunochemical methodologies outlined thus far may best be illustrated by several examples showing how they have been used to define antigenic determinants. 

The application of dual detection [UV and refractive index (RI)] to the SEC analysis of polystyrene-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-PMMA) has already been studied in this laboratory (2). Both MWD and CCD were determined using a methodology outlined by Runyon et al. (3). This approach relies on SEC column calibration with narrow polydis-persity standards for each of the homopolymers as well as a measure of the detector response factors for each homopolymer to produce a copolymer MWD. In the case of PS and PMMA this is feasible, but in other block copolymer systems the availability of suitable molecular weight standards may be more limited. In addition, this procedure does rely on true SEC and is not valid for block copolymers for which the universal calibration does not hold true for both blocks in a given solvent system. 

For a sinusoidal steady excitation and small deflections, the elastic and viscoelastic solutions are formally similar, as the separation of variables methodology outlined above suggests. Thus, in this case, the viscoelastic response is dependent on only the specific material properties of the sample under study. Moreover, on the basis of one of the hypotheses mentioned above, the thermoviscoelastic problem can be reduced to a thermoelastic one. Therefore, in the present context only the elastic solution of the problem will be discussed. 

The methodology outlined in Scheme 10.50 has also been adopted to a corresponding stereoselective solid-phase approach to a-amino acids using the galactosylamine 160 immobilized on a polystyrene-based resin, enabling the combinatorial synthesis of stereoisomerically pure compounds (Figure 10.15) [123].
