Alcoholic beverages are heavily taxed in many countries, but besides being used to make drinks, ethanol has many useful industrial applications. It is used to make other organic chemicals and is an extremely useful industrial solvent. In order to avoid heavy taxation of the ethanol used for industrial purposes it is rendered unfit to drink (denatured). Small amounts of methanol are added to ethanol to produce industrial methylated spirit . A purple dye is often added to methylated spirit sold for domestic use. The dye serves as a warning that the mixture is undrinkable. [Pg.333]

Denatured alcohol is ethanol rendered unfit for drinking or internal medicinal use by the addition of a small fraction of some malodorous or obnoxious substance. Once denatured, ethanol is no longer subject to beverage tax although it is still widely acceptable commercially as a solvent, raw material, fuel, fluid, etc. The most effective denaturants have a boiling point sufficiently close to that of ethanol to make separation by distillation difficult. They include methanol, brucine, brucine sulphate, quassin, n-butanol, petroleum, and wood distillates. Methylated spirits and industrial alcohol are used synonymously with denatured alcohol although the first specifically applies to those alcohols denatured by methanol (67-56-1) while the latter may have been denatured only by dilution with water. [Pg.6]

A mixture of methanol and ethanol is available as a low excise duty blend as industrial methylated spirits (IMS). Economic, political and social pressures have influenced the manufacture of ethanol since the fermentation process was introduced many years ago (see Chapter 1). In the nineteenth century its status as an industrial solvent was assured when industrial methylated spirit, which is ethanol denatured with methanol to make it unfit for human consumption, was freed from excise duty. In the twentieth century, the social and political pressures which provide economic support for agriculture have allowed fermentation to compete effectively with petrochemistry as a manufacturing process. The technical achievements in chemistry, biology and engineering have only facilitated the switch between carbohydrate and oil as feedstock for the process. [Pg.142]

In 1855, the ethanol manufactured in this process of fermentation and distillation was exempted from excise duty, provided it was first denatured with methanol. Only then was the resulting product (industrial methylated spirit) able to develop as an industrial solvent. Nature produces a tremendous amount of methyl aleohol, simply by the fermentation of wood, grass, and other materials made to some degree of eellulose. In faet, methyl aleohol is known as wood aleohol, along with names sueh as wood spirits and methanol (its proper name the proper names of all aleohols end in -ol). Methyl aleohol is a eolorless liquid with a eharaeteristie aleohol odor. It has a flash point of 54°F, and is highly toxie. It has too many eommereial uses to list here, but among them are as a denaturant for ethyl alcohol (the addition of the toxie ehemieal methyl aleohol to ethyl aleohol in order to form denatured aleohol), antifreezes, gasoline additives, and solvents.
