Metam-sodium is used for control of soil fungi, nematodes, soil insects for mint, peanuts, potatoes, small grains, tobacco, and tree fruits. Its oral LD50 in rats is 1891-1928 mg/kg. 

Dichloropropene, methyl iodide, chloropicrin, dazomet, and metam-sodium are potential alternatives after the phaseout of methyl bromide. However, methyl bromide has shown to be difficult to replace because of its low cost and effectiveness against a wide variety of pests.

Cadmium decreases testosterone production by preventing the synthesis of cholesterol, a precursor of all steroid hormones. Other chemicals that interfere with steroid hormone synthesis include aminoglute-thimide, cyanoketone, and ketoconazole. Copper chelating compounds, such as dithiocarbamates, metam sodium, and carbon disulfide, suppress the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine and subsequently to epinephrine.

Carbon disulfide is a volatile organic solvent, used mainly as a starting material in rayon manufacture in the viscose process. It was important historically in the cold vulcanization of rubber. Although no longer used in this form, carbon disulfide is still a major industrial precursor in rubber industry chemical synthesis and has a number of other industrial applications. Carbon disulfide is also widely used as a solvent in a variety of laboratory settings. Carbon disulfide is a metabolite of the drug disulfiram (see pp 186) and is a spontaneous breakdown by-product of the pesticide metam sodium.
