Metal-matrix composites can be tailored to have optimal thermal and physical properties to meet requirements of electronic packaging systems, eg, cotes, substrates, carriers, and housings. A controUed thermal expansion space tmss, ie, one having a high precision dimensional tolerance in space environment, was developed from a carbon fiber (pitch-based)/Al composite. Beryllium and aluminum are virtually insoluble in one another in the soHd state. Applications. Boron fibers are used as unidirectional reinforcement for epoxy composites in the form of preimpregnated tape. The combination of infiltration and reaction that characterizes DMO has been exploited to make a number of composites. SiC whisker also can be combined with metals (MMCs, metal matrix composites) to increase the high temperature strength of the material as well as provide a comparable substitution for heavier traditional materials, such as steel. The Saffil fiber which contains 4% of silica is produced by the blow extrusion of partially hydrolyzed solutions of some aluminum salts with a small amount of silica, in which the liquid is extruded through apertures into a high velocity gas stream. The fiber contains mainly small 8-alumina grains of around 50 run but also some a-alumina grains of 100 run. The widest use of the Saffil type fiber in composites is in the form of a mat which can be shaped to the form desired and then infiltrated with molten metal, usually aluminium alloy. SiC whiskers were initially developed in the early 1960s. However, their use was originally to be applied to the reinforcement of metal matrices, such as aluminum. These metal matrix composites were only a small commercial success, mainly because of the high cost of the whiskers. The first application of whisker reinforcement to ceramics, and in particular alumina, did not occur until the 1980 s.
