Terrestrial materials (river sediments, lake sediments, and urban particulate matter) appear to have between 50% and 70% exchangeable Pb and Zn while marine sediments contain very little exchangeable metal but appreciably more reducible and much more residual Pb and Zn (Kersten and Forstner, 1995). This may not be too surprising as exchangeable metals are released once freshwater mixes with salt water and redistribution in the marine environment results in some precipitated phases (carbonates, Fe/Mn oxyhydroxides) and the relative increase in the lithogenic fraction. In future, the solid-phase identification techniques should be used to classify the sediments that are to be subjected to selective extraction techniques for the purpose of understanding the heavy metal phase associations. [Pg.4622]

Instrumental Methods for Bulk Samples. With bulk fiber samples, or samples of materials containing significant amounts of asbestos fibers, a number of other instmmental analytical methods can be used for the identification of asbestos fibers. In principle, any instmmental method that enables the elemental characterization of minerals can be used to identify a particular type of asbestos fiber. Among such methods, x-ray fluorescence (xrf) and x-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (xps) offer convenient identification methods, usually from the ratio of the various metal cations to the siUcon content. The x-ray diffraction technique (xrd) also offers a powerfiil means of identifying the various types of asbestos fibers, as well as the nature of other minerals associated with the fibers (9). [Pg.352]

Where the end use of the product is known, there is usually preference to use either zinc or aluminium, both technically and because of the works problems associated with use of an alloy (identification, separation of overspray). However, in some countries (such as the United States) where there has been a recent-surge in anti-corrosion uses of metal spraying, a zinc-15%-aluminium alloy wire has been widely used. The original commercial experience was with 65-35% alloys used in powder form. Both have many of the advantages of the parent metals. At one time, the zinc-5%-aluminium alloy was also of interest. These alloy coatings may prove particularly satisfactory for sprayed coatings on articles where service conditions are not known in advance. [Pg.430]

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a class of zinc- and calcium-dependent enzymes that are responsible for the metabolism of extracellular matrix proteins [27]. Increased activity of MMPs has been associated with pathological diseases such as arthritis, cancer, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer s disease [28-31]. Therefore, they constitute an important group of drug targets. Their inhibition is accomplished by blocking the active site of the catalytic domain with ligands that contain hydroxamic or carboxylic acids to chelate the Zn metal. The identification of low molecular weight compounds that contain different scaffolds may lead to the development of a new class of specific inhibitors. [Pg.430]

Subsequent work by Gardiner et al. showed that in a relatively complex mixture like human serum, the association between a metal and protein or ligand could be said to have been established when their Gaussian distribution coincide. This is more likely to be true if the elution volumes of the constituents are in the fractionation range rather than in the excluded volume. The ligand-model vibrational spectroscopy approach has contributed strongly to fairly reliable identifications on metal surfaces of C2 species of the types 1, 2 (ethene type II spectra) (17), 3 (ethene type I spectra), 4 (ethene type I spectra), 8, and 13 (ethyne type B spectra) as well as to possible identifications of types 5, 7, 15 (ethyne type A spectra), 16, and 20. Approximate band positions and associated intensity distributions in the spectra from normal and perdeutero species should be considered together (/ 7). The correspondence of the infrared spectrum from 4 with type I spectra is less satisfactory for the C2D4 ligand than in most other cases.
