Commercial experience

Because of limited commercial experience with anode coatings in membrane cells, commercial lifetimes have yet to be defined. Expected lifetime is 5—8 years. In some cases as of this writing (ca 1995), 10-years performance has already been achieved. Actual lifetime is dictated by the membrane replacement schedule, cell design, the level of oxygen in the chlorine gas, and by the current density at which the anode is operated.

Where the end use of the product is known, there is usually preference to use either zinc or aluminium, both technically and because of the works problems associated with use of an alloy (identification, separation of overspray). However, in some countries (such as the United States) where there has been a recent-surge in anti-corrosion uses of metal spraying, a zinc-15%-aluminium alloy wire has been widely used. The original commercial experience was with 65-35% alloys used in powder form. Both have many of the advantages of the parent metals. At one time, the zinc-5%-aluminium alloy was also of interest. These alloy coatings may prove particularly satisfactory for sprayed coatings on articles where service conditions are not known in advance. 

Beer. Laboratory results obtained by Jimenez and Gauldin (19) as well as commercial experience have shown that beer in aluminum cans is superior in flavor, color, and clarity to beer packed in tinplate cans. Table V summarizes the effect of aluminum and iron on beer stored for six months in the two types of metal containers. However, these viscosity results are inconsistent with commercial experience comparing high 2-phenyl and low 2-phenyl LAS. It has been reported that high 2-phenyl LAS made by the AlCl3/chloroparaffin process gives better solubility and lower viscosity than low 2-phenyl LAS [15,16]. The apparent inconsistency between the results shown in Table 5 and commercial experience is due to the DATS level. 

ExxonMobil extended the Hydrofining technology to produce a 200 ppm diesel, with the Diesel Oil Deep Desulfurization technology, DODD. The reactor is packed with multiple beds of different catalysts. A preceding history of commercial experience provided data to build a model for deep HDS and pave the way to a new technology, MAK Fining.
