Some of those elements are associated with your mental and physical health, well-being, education, skills and empathy. Do not wait for the elements of your life to be put in place for you. If you take the latter approach, opportunities will still be present, and will still come to you, but you will not see them, nor be capable of exploiting them.

The simplest economic theories assume— somewhat unrealistically—that markets work sufficiendy well to ensure that society s scarce resources are allocated efficiendy. Of course, few markets are as well-behaved as in the elementary textbook, but nevertheless market forces can often be relied upon to allocate goods and services reasonably well between competing demands. If this is the case, then the need for economic evaluation of the costs and outcomes flowing from alternative uses of scarce resources is lessened. Mental health-care services in Britain are purchased and provided within internal markets (quasi-markets) within the state sector (mainly), and these muted market forces have clearly had some influence over allocations. Market forces have a more overt role in countries such as the USA, strongly influencing who obtains what service and at what cost to different parties. Sometimes you may also see quality-of-life (QOL) data collected for your clinical trial. Quality-of-life data are collected to measure the overall physical and mental well-being of a patient. These data are usually collected with a multiple-question patient questionnaire and may be summed up into an aggregate patient score for analysis. Some commonly used quality-of-life questionnaires are the SF-36 and SF-12 Health Survey, but there are quite a few disease-specific QOL questionnaires available to clinical researchers.

We can hardly escape the realization that brain metabolism is both extremely active and extremely important for the well-being and intellectual activity of the organism, and that unless it proceeds in a normal fashion mental health cannot exist. 

Abuse. We have all heard the terms substance abuse, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, cocaine abuse, and so on. In one sense, any illicit use of a substance is abuse. For example, from the legal point of view, whenever someone smokes crack (even if it is the only time), (s)he has broken the law and abused cocaine. Likewise, if you borrow a prescription sedative or pain reliever from a friend, then you have similarly abused that medication. That is an appropriate use of the term in many cases, but this is not customarily the way that mental health specialists use the term. From our perspective, substance abuse involves a pattern of repeated use over time that results in problems in one or more areas. These include compromised physical health and well-being, legal proceedings, job status, and relationships as well as overall day-to-day functioning. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the UN s specialized agency for health. It was established in 1948. WHO s objective, as set out in its constitution, is the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined in WHO s constitution as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely as the absence of disease or infirmity. 

The practical difficulties of viewing output in terms of health achieved is that health is notoriously difficult to define, measure and value. Broad definitions of health, such as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being given by the World Health Organisation, are unhelpful when trying to compare... 

Results of a National Institute of Mental Health collaborative study indicated that antidepressant therapy should not be discontinued before 4-5 symptom-free months have passed (Prien and Kupfer 1986). Most clinicians treat single episodes of depression for a minimum of 6 months. In most cases, antidepressant medication should be continued at the same dose that resulted in remission—hence the saying, what gets you well keeps you well. ... 

Therefore, an economic analysis must measure the quality of life of the patient to ensure that the value of the drug incorporates the patient s perspective. Quality of life is a concept that usually incorporates the physical, mental and social well-being of the patient. Initial doubts concerning the ability of schizophrenic patients to provide reliable and valid reports of their own quality of life led to the use of proxies for patient interviews. Caregivers and clinicians were consulted most often. However, recent research has shown that the use of proxies can produce very different results to those derived directly from the patient s responses. In addition, research now indicates that schizophrenic patients are able to provide stable, reliable and valid self-reports of their psychological well-being, health status and subjective evaluation of drug therapies (Awad et al., 1995). 

Health and wellness. Modern consumers are increasingly focused on personal well-being (physical and mental health, beauty). 

A third reason LSD users might require medical attention is when they develop LSD psychosis. As mentioned earlier, regardless of the underlying cause of psychosis, the best treatment appears to be the same as that used for people who have similar mental health problems not related to taking LSD. So, a person with psychosis following an LSD trip generally responds as well to antipsychotic therapy as a person who develops psychosis without taking LSD does. 

A continuing psychosis triggered by hallucinogen use should be treated in the same manner as any other ongoing psychotic disorder. Hospitalization may be required to stabilize the patient s condition, to initiate treatment, or to prevent injury to the patient or others. Long-term use of antipsychotic medications may be necessary, as well as continuing involvement in programs of mental health treatment and rehabilitation. 

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO, 1948). This implies that the human health effects which are relevant indoors include both adverse effects and changes of well-being associated with exposures to environmental factors. Therefore, the diagnosis of an environmental health effect, includes both identification of a human health problem and an exposure, that is, identification of causality.
