Menopause

C,flH2o02- White crystals, m.p. 168-171 °C. Prepared from deoxyanisoin by ethylation, conversion to the alcohol, dehydration and demethylation. It is an oestrogenic substance which is highly active when administered orally. It is used for treating menopausal symptoms, for the suppression of lactation and for treatment of cancer of the prostate. [Pg.372]

Since dietary cereals are low in sulfur-containing amino acids, they produce an alkaline urine which favors the retention of bone minerals. In post-menopausal women, there appears to be some interaction between the diet and the effect produced by estrogens on bone mineral content (28). [Pg.352]

In premenopausal women the ovary is the richest source of aromatase and hence estrogen. Aromatase is confined to the granulosa cells and is produced under the influence of gonadotropins (FSH and LH). Despite being a rich source of aromatase, three separate studies have shown that aromatase inhibitors are unable to sufficiently suppress ovarian estrogen production to postmenopausal levels. One explanation for this phenomenon may be a compensatory rise in gonadotrophins which maintains adequate estrogen production, despite the presence of the inhibitor. As such aromatase inhibitors cannot be used in premenopausal breast cancer patients. After menopause, ovarian... [Pg.219]

ERT is a clinical treatment whereby premenopausal estrogen levels are restored and the symptoms of menopause are relieved. [Pg.483]

Estrogens and progestins are diminished in menopausal or ovarectomized women. In hormone replacement therapy (HRT), these hormones are substituted to alleviate hot flushes, mood changes, sleep disorders, and osteoporosis. [Pg.599]

Administration of clomiphene may result in vasomotor flushes (which are like the hot flashes of menopause), abdominal discomfort, ovarian enlargement, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, and nervousness. HCG administration may result in headache, irritability, restlessness, fatigue edema, and precocious puberty (when given for cryptorchism). [Pg.511]

M ale and female hormones play a vital role because they aid in development and maintenance of secondary sex characteristics and are necessary for human reproduction. Although hormones are naturally produced by die body, administration of a male or female hormone may be indicated in the treatment of certain disorders, such as inoperable breast cancer, male hypogonadism, and male or female hormone deficiency. Hormones also are used as contraceptives and for treating the symptoms of menopause... [Pg.538]
