Mood changes

Estrogens and progestins are diminished in menopausal or ovarectomized women. In hormone replacement therapy (HRT), these hormones are substituted to alleviate hot flushes, mood changes, sleep disorders, and osteoporosis.

In humans, MDA and MDMA have been reported to produce positive mood changes, enhanced emotional awareness, and improved interpersonal communication (Greer and Tolbert 1986 Downing 1986 Shulgin 1986 Peroutka et al. 1988). Because of these psychotropic effects, MDA and MDMA have been used in psychotherapeutic situations (Naranjo et al. 1967 Yensen et al. 1976 Grinspoon and Bakalar 1986). In addition, presumably because of the same positive subjective effects, recreational use of MDMA on college campuses has increased in recent years (Peroutka et al. 1988).

The other side of the psychological coin from cognition is emotion, and caffeine has also been shown to have important effects on this aspect of functioning as well. Depending on dosage level and concurrent factors, caffeine can result in either positive or negative mood changes.

Bipolar disorder is characterised by a period of mania, then a period of comparatively normal behaviour (euthymia), before progressing to a period of depression. The rate at which these mood changes occur can vary, being prolonged in some individuals and shorter in others. This periodicity is often characteristic and unchanging for an individual. In some rare instances the mood cycle is not only predictable but also very rapid for instance, 16 hours of mania, followed by 8 hours of euthymia, then 48 hours of depression. 

The clinical value of lithium has been recognized since 1949. Lithium carbonate is used in manic depressive psychoses for the treatment of recurrent mood changes.261,262 Mood stability may only occur after months rather than weeks. The drug is administered orally in doses up to 2 g day-1 (30 mmol day-1). The serum Li concentration should be in the range of 0.4-0.8 mmol 1. ... 

In cases of secondary amenorrhea, symptoms may include hot flushes, night sweats, fatigue, and mood changes. In primary amenorrhea, incomplete development of secondary sex characteristics may occur.

The clinical syndrome tends to follow a sequential pattern, with somatic symptoms presenting first, perceptual and mood changes next, and, finally, psychic changes, although there is considerable overlap between these phases (Table 1). Glucocorticoids are known to produce mental changes that range from moderate mood changes, severe depression, and euphoria to psychosis. Steroid psychosis is characterized by a delirium and a clouded sensorium. The onset of symptoms usually occurs within 5 to 30 days after therapy is initiated. The incidence rate appears to correlate closely with dosage level (a rate of 1.3% when the dose was 40 mg or less 4.6% when it was between 41 and 80 mg and 18.4% when it was 80 mg or more.
