Thus, microorganisms have been used in cancer treatment. For example. Moss has a chapter about Coley s Toxins, a mixed bacterial vaccine, in the treatment of cancer (Moss, 1992, pp. 407 12). Moss calls the discovery of these toxins one of the most remarkable happenings in the history of cancer therapy. Discovered in the late nineteenth century by William B. Coley, M.D., chief surgeon at Memorial Hospital (now the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or MSKCC), who undertook a 40-year experiment in treating and even curing cancer. Coley s Toxins may be regarded as the basis for modem immunotherapy. 

The interlocking network that exists between orthodox medicine and the financial world is spelled out in Clarence Mullins prominently cited book Death by Injection The Story of the Medical Conspiracy against America, particularly, in the early chapters and notably in the chapter titled Profits from Cancer. Both the American Medical Association (AMA) and the drug companies are involved. The Rockefeller interests are prominently mentioned, as well as the ties with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). 

On the other hand... the death of actor Steve McQueen, who had terminal cancer, is sometimes viewed as a refutation for laetrile. However, it is reported instead that he was responding well imder treatment, but was persuaded to undergo an operation and died of an embolism (Mullins, 1992, p. 100). Other positive results have evidently been suppressed, for example, at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Mullins recoimts the story of the firing of Ralph Moss, who had contradicted the official negative statements. Still others view laetrile as one more treatment among several, the entirety to be tried as a counter to cancer. 

In this regard, a number of specialized research centers are slated to address and participate in discussions on these issues, and include the following the Johns Hopkins Center for Cancer Complementary Medicine the Specialized Center of Research in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania the Botanical Center for Age-Related Diseases at Purdue University and the UCLA Center for Dietary Supplement Research on Botanicals. These are in addition to other well-known cancer research and treatment centers located around the country, such as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, etc. 

In Part 3, Cohen focuses on the American Cancer Society and its blacklist of alternative therapies. For starters, he cites an article by Andrew Vickers titled Alternative Cancer Cures Unproven or Disproven in the March/April 2004 issue of CA — A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, a publication of the American Cancer Society. Vickers is described as an Assisting Attending Research Methodologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Asserting that many alternative cancer treatments have been investigated in good quality clinical trials, Vickers states that...
