Membranes packings

The introduction of water, or air to a lesser extent, from the backside of flexible membranes reduces chamber volume and squeezes the cake yielding a further lowering of the moisture content. The filter press may be arranged as a mixed pack of flush and membrane plates, full flush or full membrane pack depending on the application. [Pg.188]

A large membrane pack of this type will act like an artificial gill, permitting a swimmer to breathe like a fish and remain submerged for much longer periods of time than are possible with scuba equipment. Speculative fiction has man returning to live in the seas, and this type of application may make it possible. Their application in spacecraft is obvious as a part of a continuously recycled air support system. The oxygen permeability of silicone materials is just one example of the selective permeability of plastics. [Pg.266]

An industrial reverse osmosis unit consists of many semipermeable membranes packed around highly pressurized saltwater. As desalinated water is pushed out one side, the remaining saltwater, which is now even more concentrated, exits on the other side. A network of reverse osmosis units operating parallel to one another can produce enormous volumes of fresh water from saltwater. [Pg.564]

FIG. 10 Main results of typical limiting current tests performed using a membrane pack composed of 19 CMV membranes (Table II) under two levels of NaCl concentration (cB = 9 mol/m3, closed symbols cB = 28 mol/m3, open symbols) and superficial velocity vs 3.4 cm/s A, 5.9 cm/s), as derived from Fidaleo and Moresi (2005a) voltage (E) vs. current intensity (/). [Pg.298]

Assuming perfect mixing in each compartment of the membrane pack and reservoir of the ED unit shown in Figure 9, the solute concentration in any of them is uniform and equal to that of the outlet stream. Therefore, by assuming pseudo-steady state conditions in any compartment, the differential solute and water mass balances in the diluted (D) and concentrated (C) reservoirs can be written as follows ... [Pg.343]

A still higher membrane packing density can be accomplished with some geometries available to certain commercial organic membranes. One such attempt is hollow fibers [Baker et al., 1978 Beaver, 1986]. Sintered monolithic hollow fibers of metals or metal oxides have been developed [Dobo and Graham, 1979] but their burst strengths appear to be critical. Further developments are needed before commercialization. [Pg.556]

As in the case of all membrane separation processes, the choice of an appropriate module type is based on feed type (viscosity, suspended solids content, and particle size), required membrane packing density (based on flux, total throughput, and available floor space), good flow hydrodynamics (for minimization of concentration polarization, effective cleaning and sanitation), and module cost. The various types of membrane modules and their fabrication have been reviewed by Strathmann.f Hollow fiber modules, which have the highest membrane packing density of all module types, are the most suitable for use in OD because of the inherently low flux of this process. However, the membranes that have provided the best fluxes and volatiles retention because of their relatively large pore diameters and porosities, that is those fabricated from PTFE, have not yet become available in hollow fibers with an acceptably low wall thickness. [Pg.1990]

GPI anchors may provide subtle functions, such as influencing the overall characteristics of the cell membrane. The fatty acid content of the anchor contributes to the lipid composition of the membrane and can determine the membrane packing characteristics of the protein. Membrane-anchored proteins that do not require transmembrane or cytoplasmic domains will, by default, reduce protein clutter by not interfering with other molecules in these regions [8,20]. [Pg.79]

Open tubular UF designs have been more successfully applied to juice clarification, since solutions high in suspended solids and viscosity can be accomodated due to large, circular flow channels. The disadvantage to open tubular designs is the low membrane packing density and increased tube support needed for higher... [Pg.346]

The advantage, if any, of using a few large electrodialysis units rather than a multiplicity of smaller units (the term unit is here taken as a membrane press, whether consisting of one or a number of membrane packs). The plant uses the principle of multiple packs in each electrodialysis unit or press. ... [Pg.142]
