Consequently medical provision of operational safety for nuclear plants and installations in Russia is ensured by the common system of supervision and control of the personnel and equipment in the nuclear industry as well as by special measures elaborated by the Institute of Biophysicstate Research Centre within the framework of State programs. 

The search for a technical fix is misguided for a further important reason. As already noted, many of the casualties of war are not the result of major military strikes. Two statutory provisions of Tide 21 govern the introduction of new medical devices into the marketplace. Good washing facilities should be provided, together with hot and cold running water, soap, medically approved skin-cleansers, clean towels and, ideally, showers. The FDA are allowed 90 days to review a Traditional or Abbreviated 510(k) notification, and just 30 days for a Special 510(k). With the introduction of the Medical Device User Fee and Modernization Act of2002, provision was made for the participation of third-party organisations in the review process. This represents a partial adoption of the concept of Notified Bodies, which prevails in Europe. The FDA have accredited a number of commercial organisations to conduct primary 510(k) reviews of670 types of device. The FDA must then give a final determination within 30 days of receipt of the recommendation of a third-party reviewer. Because they are commercial, third-party reviewers will seek to offer faster review times in return for their review fee. If using a third-party reviewer, the FDA user fee does not apply. The outcome of a successful 510(k) notification is a letter from the FDA clearing the device for commercial sale. 

Studies have shown that CM can be used to directly reinforce adherence to medication treatments as well (Petty 2000). Liebson et al (1978) found that methadone-maintained alcohol-dependent patients reduced alcohol use when methadone treatment was contingent on disulfiram consumption. To date, one of the most common applications of CM techniques to pharmacotherapy has been the provision of vouchers or cash contingent upon naltrexone consumption in recently detoxified opioid-dependent patients (Carroll et al. 2001, 2002 Preston et al. 1999). These studies have generally reported significant increases in retention and reductions in opioid use among patients receiving the CM treatment, relative to other therapies. 

To compare the epidemiological, clinical, and economic impacts of the HIV epidemic in Italy prior to and after the introduction of HAART, Tramarin et al. (2004) conducted a prospective and observational study with a multi-center design. They used data collected on an AIDS cohort from 1994 and updated data from a comparable cohort in 1998. Mortality and medical costs of 251 patients were measured in 1994 and in 1998, respectively. A considerable difference was observed in mortality (33.9% in 1994 vs. 3.9% in 1998). The cost per patient per year was US 15,515 in 1994 and US 10,312 in 1998. Based on the comparison of the two cohorts between both years, the authors concluded that after the introduction of HAART, hospital-based provision shifted from an inpatient-based to an outpatient-based service, with major focus on pharmaceutical care.

To ensure that an operation is under control may necessitate atmospheric monitoring this is summarized in Chapter 9.
