Putting it into Practice

While the basic principle of inherently safer design is generally accepted, it is not always easy to put it into practice. Inherently safer design has been advocated since the explosion at Flixborough in 1974. Progress has been real but nevertheless the concept has not been adopted nearly as rapidly as quantitative risk assessment, introduced into the chemical industry only a few years earlier (Kletz, 1996). 

A major challenge facing a multilocation company is assuring that the best product, specific or process-specific knowledge reaches the people who must put it into practice. There are times, for example, when a plant superintendent in Thailand has more in common with a counterpart in Stade, Germnay than with his neighbor in the office next door. 

However, the concept and philosophy of clinical pharmacy is not yet implemented in all hospitals and is found even less among community pharmacists. Most community pharmacists saw clinical pharmacy linked to hospital practice and hardly adapted to the needs of the community practice setting. That is probably the reason why the pharmaceutical care concept was formulated by Hepler and Strand. But with the concept of pharmaceutical care, we carry the same risk as with clinical pharmacy. Many people are talking about the concept, but few are putting in the effort and means required to put it into practice. 

This computation program, which looks straightforward, was described by de Gennes in 1977,10,11 but it was not easy to put it into practice. However, in 1978, Gabay and Garel12 succeeded in obtaining, with this method, the first term in the expansion of v as a function of e = 4 — d (d = space dimension) namely v = 1/2(1 + s/8 +. ..). However, this result was already known, and at the present time (1988), no algorithm exists which could be used to proceed much further with the decimation method.13... 

Discuss the order of the previous concerns (8.5Q3) with associates, supervisors, and management. Then, agree on a consensus for your organization, put it in writing, and put it into practice ... 

The following examples of this procedure will help you put it into practice. 

Challenge every problem answer in both size and units. Many errors would never been seen by a test grader if the test taker had simply checked the reasonableness of an answer. Part D in Appendix I offers some suggestions on how to estimate the numerical result in a problem. Please read this section and put it into practice with every problem you solve. 

In their physical investigation of the mine following the disaster, MSHA investigators had discovered a methane monitor covered with a greasy rag. This physical evidence constituted a clear violation of the Mine Act, but investigators needed to determine who had ordered the monitor to be covered and who had put it into practice. 

For a future development, it should be important to note that the development of the LCD came naturally at that time, based on the available techniques, but putting it into practical use needed the presence of individuals who can read the social trends and needs of that time and overcome the various difficulties.
