There is an intimate connection between my own life and the accounts of the fifty people I interviewed for this book. Each person helped me think more deeply about my own experiences with medication. For this reason I am very grateful to those who so freely shared their difficult and often heroic experiences. Social science stories must be absolutely grounded in respondents feelings, thoughts, and observations. Their experiences constitute the core of this enterprise. I hope I have done justice to their words. [Pg.281]

Clinicians must evaluate all components of the pain experience, e.g., behavioral (part of our reaction to pain is learned),cognitive (thinking processes alter pain experiences),social (pain expression differs in accordance with social environments), and cultural (cultural background may influence pain tolerance). In addition, separating pain with neuropathic pathophysiology (see Fig. 58-2) from that caused by a known nociceptive pathophysiology (e.g., posttrauma pain) allows for improved treatment regimens. Nociceptive... [Pg.1091]

Particle swarm optimization (PSO), originally proposed by Kennedy and Eberhart in 1995, is a population-based random search approach that simulates the behavior of bird flocking or fish schooling. In the original model, each individual particle in a swarm learns and adapts its search behavior based on its own experience (cognitive term) and global experience (social term) during the search. [Pg.439]

We should not xmderestimate the importance of individual differences in behaviour and their importance for s ety. Informal communication between coworkers is considered as an optimal way to exchange rapid feedback, share local context and reference common depictions [2]. But it comes at a cost interruptions. If interruptions occur at wrong moments they cause loss of concentration, anxiety and time pressure [1]. However, once initiated at right times they serve as natural breaks and provide content for expressive interaction between colleagues. Current solutions supporting handling interruptions assume the interruptee s availability to be the best predictor of an appropriate interruption moment [2]. Yet, interruptors seem not to fully adhere to those availability indications as the proposed systems fail to help them convey their communicative needs. Also interruptees seem to experience social responsibility and they often reevaluate their availability according to the actual needs of their interruptors [4],... [Pg.569]
