Mechanical seals mounted

Here is an illustration of a typical cartridge mechanical seal mounted on a shaft in the seal chamber of the pump (Figure 13-18).

There are three types of mechanical seals ng e, double, and landcm. The double mechanical seal has two mechanical seals mounted back to back. The tandem mechanical seal consists two mechanical seals mounted in series. Double and tandem mechanical seals arc more effective than the single mechanical seal.

The single, unbalanced, inside mounted mechanical seal... 

This dial indicator is fixed to the volute mounting adapter collar of the pump and the needle is on the shaft (Figure 14-21). The shaft should be moved radially by hand (see the arrows) up and down. Note the movement in the indicator. This is a check of the radial tolerance in the bearing. Some people use the word run out . Radial dellection causes misalignment of the rotating and stationary faces of the mechanical seal. This shortens the seal life by eausing drive pins and springs to wear and rub in relative motion. 

Mechanical seals and glands for all pumps, except vertically-suspended pumps shipped without drivers mounted, shall be installed in the pump before shipment and shall be clean and ready for initial service. If seals require final adjustment or installation in the field, the vendor shall attach a metal tag warning of this requirement.

Diameter. The seal mounting surface includes the shaft or shaft sleeve outside diameter within the stuffing box or seal chamber and enough length beyond to accommodate outside seals. The diameter of the seal mounting surface shall be sized in increments of % in. (3.2 mm). To provide for the use of mechanical seals, the tolerance on that diameter shall not exceed nominal to minus 0.002 in. (0.05 mm).

The reactor recirculation pumps are vertically mounted, centrifugal, mechanical seal type and are constructed of stainless steel. The pumps operate at 25% of rated speed during startup and are powered from a low-frequency motor generator set. Following startup, the pumps operate at constant speed and are powered from auxiliary power. 

Refer to the figure below. In case of horizontal mounting of another foundation, complete suction and discharge piping with valves can be kept ready for immediate changeover if the pump breaks down. But this will need more floor space, sets of valves, electrical cables, etc. For these pumps, external dyke walls are required in order to contain any toxic/corrosive liquid that may leak out from the pump and acid/alkali resistant tiles are also necessary. Mechanical seals are required for toxic/inflammable/corrosive fluids (oleums, chloro-sulphonic acid) so as to prevent leakages... 

The mounting cup (ferrule for botde valves) mechanically joins the valve to the container. The mounting cup may be made from a variety of materials, but is typically tin-plated steel coated on the underside. It contains the gasket which provides the seal. Soft gasketing material is appHed wet and bonded in place or, more frequently in larger cans, cut mbber, polyethylene, or polypropylene gaskets are used. 

More complex environmental rigs can be illustrated by an arrangement where pipe line components, seals, valves, etc., are mounted as in service and pressurised cyclically with the service fluid. The rig is contained in an enclosure so that elevated or subnormal temperatures can be applied. The degree of acceleration can be varied for both mechanical and environmental factors. 

A. 2-Mercapto-4-amino-5-carbethoxypyrimidine. A 5-1. threenecked, round-bottomed flask mounted in a heating mantle is fitted with a 250-ml. dropping funnel, an efficient, sealed, mechanical stirrer, and a reflux condenser connected to a calcium chloride drying tube. Absolute ethanol (625 ml.) is placed in the flask, the stirrer is started, and 23 g. (1 g.-atom) of freshly cut sodium is added in portions. After the sodium has dissolved, 76.1 g. (1 mole) of thiourea is added to the warm, stirred solution in one portion. When the bulk of the thiourea has dissolved, 169 g. (1 mole) of liquefied ethyl ethoxymethylenecyanoacetate is added from the dropping funnel to the stirred mixture over a period of 2 hours (Note 1). This rate of addition keeps the reaction mixture warm. The solution is then stirred and gently refluxed for 6 hours. The sodium salt of the carbethoxypyrimidine may precipitate during the course of the reaction.
