Measuring and control systems

The total pressure during freeze drying may be measured by several methods, though only two are mostly used heat conductivity, and the membrane pressure difference gauge. Their operating principles and their advantages and disadvantages are described below. [Pg.158]

The principle of design of a heat conductivity gauge (TM) is shown in Fig. 2.30. Electrical energy is fed into the wire (2) in such a way, that the temperature of the wire is kept constant. This amount of heat per time is in the area 2 of Fig. 2.31 and is approx, propor- [Pg.158]

The membrane- or capacity gauges are more expensive than TMs, but the difference can be neglected even in the cost of a pilot plant. Sensors for such gauges are available for sterilization by steam. [Pg.160]

Plot of pressure, if no measurable gas is desorbed from the walls 2, plot of pressure, if desorption of gas stops after 2 h at a pressure of 0.08 mbar 3, plot of pressure if desorption of gas stops after 3 h at a pressure of 0.14 mbar. [Pg.161]

Partial gas- or vapor pressures during freeze drying can also be measured by a mass spectrometer, and water vapor pressures by hygrometers, sensitive only for water vapor. Both systems are necessary for development- and analytical work, but in production plants they need only to be used to check or identify process data. [Pg.161]

The arrival of integrated circuits with very good performance/price ratios and relatively low-cost microprocessors and memories has had a profound influence on many areas of technical endeavour. Also in the measurement and control field, modem electronic circuits were introduced on a large scale leading to very sophisticated systems and novel solutions. However, in these measurement and control systems, quite often sensors and actuators were applied that were conceived many decades ago. Consequently, it became necessary to improve these devices in such a way that their performance/price ratios would approach that of modem electronic circuits. [Pg.406]

The use of chemical analysis to monitor the quality of the raw materials or finished products of industrial processes goes back a long way.313,314 Indeed, some techniques owe their development to the need of industry for rapid analytical techniques. However, analytical methods are now often intimately bound up with the production itself, and supply much of the information required for the control and regulation of the process.315 A good example of a continuous monitoring technique that can be used in process control is that of electrodeless conductivity measurement its history has been described.316 A history of early industrial pH measurement and control systems has been given.317... [Pg.171]

The computer systems used within each of these levels tend to have common characteristics that will influence their validation. For instance, measurement and control systems are generally configurable Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) instruments. Examples include control instrumentation, analytical instrumentation, and medical devices including blood processing systems. [Pg.441]

Because these functions are realized as part of a single instrument, they can be combined to create versatile measurement and control systems. Data gathered can also be transformed by the computer to generate displays that are more meaningful and easier to interpret than outputs from conventional instruments. Students do not need to know anything about computers to use MBL tools because menu-driven software can make the use of the tool self-explanatory. [Pg.159]

The experimental apparatus employed to study the catalytic performance of the samples consists of a flow measuring and control system, the reactor and an on line analytical system. The reactor is a 30 cm long pyrex tube with an expanded 2 cm long section in the middle (8 mm l.D.) in which the catalyst sample is placed. The catalyst powder is held in dace by means of quartz-wool pieces. The furnace temperature is controlled by means of a temperature contrcdler using a K-type thermocouple placed between the reactor and the walls of the furnace. The temperature inside the catalyst bed is measured by means of a K-type thermocouple (0.5 mm O.D.) placed in a 1/16 O.D. ss well which runs through the center of the cell. [Pg.142]

Thermistors are semiconductor resistors that have resistor values that vary over a wide range. They are available with both positive and negative temperature coefficients and are used for temperature measurements and control systems, as well as for temperature compensation. In the latter they are utilized to offset unwanted increases or decreases in resistance due to temperature change. [Pg.150]

In looking back over 26 years of commercial experience It Is appropriate to comment on product quality. Significant improvements have been made compared with the commercial Delrin of 1960 in terms of melt stability, molecular weight distribution and control, the level and uniformity of physical properties and the color and colorability of natural color product. These product improvements were achieved by persistent chemical and engineering effort on the chemistry of the process, modernization of equipment, compounding technology and automated measurement and control systems. [Pg.112]
