Another way to interpret the maturity level of Infosys s processes is to consider them as vesting the firm with dynamic capabilities. As with any process analytical application, instrument selection is based on the required analytical merits (sensitivity, dynamic range, precision and accuracy, etc.), process and enviromnental conditions, integration complexities (mechanical and controls automation) and operational and maintenance requirements. Because of the wide disparity in analytical performance and functionalities among photometric and spectroscopic LIE process instruments, selection should be carefully weighed on the basis of the technical problem, instrumental cost, implementation complexities, ease of use, conunercial and legacy maturity, level of vendor support and cost of ownership.

A dedicated team or review board should be developed to review and approve all maturity-level deliverables upon completion of the attributes for the current level. This review board s purpose is to ensure that all deliverables meet a consistent level of quality and documentation. This board can provide feedback to process owners or QMS program group to communicate best practices and lessons learned.

We should caution that the above concept of the genetic relationship between kerogens and asphaltenes differs from the more historic view that asphaltenes are condensation and/or alteration products of hydrocarbons and resins. Certainly, in some petroleum processing treatments and probably at higher maturation levels in nature, various reactions do form new products with asphaltene solubility characteristics. These new condensation products may be regarded as altered asphaltenes and intermediates in the coke or pyrobitumen formation process (62-64)- Contamination of original asphaltenes by subsequently formed or altered products, of course, will result in a less definitive correlation between an asphaltene and its source kerogen.

Determination of maturity levels is critical to the success of any exploration program. Recovery of immature, but organic-rich, source rocks would indicate good source potential for such rocks if buried more deeply in other parts of the basin. At the other extreme, an overmature source rock would indicate a mature part of the basin not capable of generating additional liquid hydrocarbons, but possibly gas. There are several indicators available that can be used to estimate the relative maturity of a source rock. The traditional method is measuring the maturity of vitrinite. The initial result from Rock Eval pyrolysis is a chromatogram with the two major peaks described above. Si and S2 (Figure 4), along with the S3 peak. As the maturity of a sample increases, the temperature at which the Si peak appears remains relatively constant however, the temperature at which S2 maximizes increases. S3 is not used directly for maturity determinations. The increase in the temperature at which S2 maximizes results from the fact that what is being measured here is the temperature at which the residual material in the rock breaks down. As the maturity level of the rock increases, the temperature required to degrade the residual material also increases. It is important to note that a direct correlation between Tmax vitrinite reflectance is not necessary.

Significant variation in organic geochemistry has been observed within the Whitby Formation and between the Whitby and Kettle Point Formations. Research is in progress to define the geological controls and to relate the resource potential as measured by TOC analyses and FA oil yields to observed variations in organic matter type and maturation level. 

Record the findings in ways commensurate with the maturity level and purposes of the student.
