Behaviour maternal

AVP plays a central role in water homeostasis of terrestrial mammals, leading to water conservation by the kidney. OT is primarily involved in milk ejection, parturition and in sexual and maternal behaviour. Both hormones are pqDtides secreted by the neurohypophysis, and both act also as neurotransmitters in the central nervous system (CNS). The major hormonal targets for AVP are the renal tubules and vascular myocytes. The hormonal targets for OT are the myoepithelial cells... [Pg.1273]

Similarly to the formation of pair bonds between adult animals, it has been demonstrated that oxytocin is also required for the onset of maternal behaviour in rodents [28]. [Pg.337]

Michel Morange Yes, but you have another mutation in another gene which is involved in dopamine metabolism which affects the same brain structure, and which gives rise to exactly the same problems with maternal behaviour. So it s an argument to show that you have nothing specific with maternal behaviour but something specific with one brain substructure. [Pg.250]

Claude Debru. Yes, a very small remark, which has been already done in a way. I didn t understand from Michel Morange s argument on this gene that this particular gene controls maternal behaviour. I understood only that it controls hypothalamus development, which is something perhaps different. What about this gene in males Has it been made knocked-out in males ... [Pg.251]

MHC genotype has also been found to influence kin recognition, in the context of maternal behaviour in mice. Female mice are more likely to form communal nests with kin of MHC-similar genotype, minimising the delivery of maternal resources to genetically unrelated individuals (Manning, Wakeland and Potts 1992). Furthermore, if mouse pups have become scattered from the nest, females preferentially retrieve pups of similar MHC type to themselves (Yamazaki, Beauchamp, Curran and Boyse 2000). The pups themselves appear to be able to use MHC-related cues to learn the odour of their mother and siblings, as revealed by a preference for odours of maternal MHC-type in a choice test (Yamazaki et al. 2000). [Pg.132]

Opioids have been shown to increase the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens but they also subserve reinforcement in animals by a non-dopaminergic mechanism (Di Chiara 8c North,1992 Koob, 1992). Physiologically the opioid system appears to be largely involved in the con-sumatory rewards of feeding, drinking, sexual and maternal behaviour (Koob, 1992 Di Chiara 8c North, 1992) and certain types of social behaviour (Panksepp, 1981 Bolles 8c Fanselow, 1982). [Pg.88]

Indeed, previous studies on animal models have demonstrated the critical role of QT and the related peptide vasopressin (VP) in stress, coping responses and social, adaptive behaviours influencing social affiliation and social recognition, sexual and maternal behaviours and anxiety and reactivity to stressors (Carter and Keverne, 2002 Pedersen and Boccia, 2006). [Pg.22]
