Marjoram Oil, Sweet

Marjoram oil (sweet marjoram oil) is obtained by steam distillation of the herb Origanum majorana L. Majorana hortensis Moench, Lamiaceae). It is a yellow to greenish- yellow liquid with a characteristic earthy-spicy odor. [Pg.204]

Marjoram Oil, Sweet, occurs as a yellow or green-yellow oil with a spicy or cardamom note. It is the volatile oil obtained by steam distillation of the dried herb of the maijoram shrub Marjoram hortensis L. (Fam. Labiatae). It is soluble in most fixed oils and in mineral oil (with turbidity). It is only partly soluble in propylene glycol, and it is insoluble in glycerin. [Pg.279]

Separation of terpinen-4-ol enantiomers performed by a chiral GC columnand a chiral lanthanide shift reagent Eu(hfc)3, showed that the enantiomeric composition of an isolated compound from sweet marjoram oil was 73% (5)(- -) 27% R) —). The (4f )(—)-enantiomer was found in the oil of Eucalyptus dives Terpinen-4-ol was also found in several bark beetle species and is the main component in the aggregation pheromone of Polygraphuspoligraphus ... [Pg.173]

Sweet marjoram oil is used mainly for flavoring foods, but also in smaller amounts in perfumery for spicy shadings in men s fragrances. FCT 1976 (14) p.469 [8015-01-8], [84012-24-8],... [Pg.204]

CompositionMain components are the sabinenes (see thujenes) (ca. 5%), a- (5-10%) and y-terpinenes (seep-menthadienes) (10-15%), cis-sabwewe Aydrate (see thujanoles) (10-15%), and terpinen-4-ol (see p-menthenols) (20-30%) the latter two compounds are mainly responsible for the organoleptic properties of sweet marjoram oil. The (genuine) oil should not be confused with the so-called Spanish oil obtained from Thymus mastichina which contains between 40 and 70%, - cineole. [Pg.383]

Main components 1-3% essential oil, rosemary acid (primarily responsible for the antioxidating effect of sweet marjoram), ursolic and oleanolic acid, phenols like arbutin [152], flavonoids [153, 154]. [Pg.235]

Composition Main constituents are a- and y-terpinene, terpinene-4-ol, a-terpineol, linalool, linalyl acetate and cis-sabinene hydrate. The latter, along with its transisomer and terpinene-4-ol, is considered as typical aroma carrier of sweet marjoram. The quantitative composition, especially of oils of uncertain botanical origin, varies considerably ]155]. Oils from India contain eugenol, methyl chavicol and geraniol in marked amounts ]156], while these compounds are negligible or absent in European oils. Commercial oils from Turkey contain considerable amounts of carvacrol, some up to 80% [157]. Also the production process can influence the oil composition, e.g. cis-sabinene hydrate is partly converted to terpinene -ol during steam distillation. The genuine plant additionally contains cis-sabinene hydrate acetate, which is almost totally hydrolysed in the steam-distilled oil [158]. [Pg.235]
