Within reason, then, interruptions can be at least partially managed, but it is important to monitor the effect of your efforts on those around you. On the other hand, if you can keep interruptions under control, you re going to accomplish more in less time and be a happier camper, having greater productivity and better control of your schedule.

The rapid growth and expansion of the chemical industry has been accompanied by a spontaneous rise in human, material, and property losses because of fires, explosions, hazardous and toxic spills, equipment failures, other accidents, and business interruptions. Business interruption policies (also known as loss of profits or consequential loss) are designed to cover the trading loss due to the occurrence of the fire or other insured peril. This loss is normally identified either by a reduction in turnover as a result of the disruption caused to the business or by increased costs incurred to minimize the loss of turnover, or indeed a combination of the two. The cover under the policy does not last for an indefinite period after the loss but is restricted to a time scale expressed in the policy as the maximum indemnity period. This time limit is chosen by the management of the business, and is the time they think that they would need to recover the trading position of the company following the incident. With fire insurance, there is a limit to the amount payable, which is the insured sum chosen by the management of the business. 

Standard operating procedures (SOPs)— The SOPs are controlled in a way similar to that of specification documents and analytical methods. It must be ensured that the correct versions of the SOPs are accessed and used by the scientists. After use, the hard copies should be destroyed and disposed of properly. An added requirement is that the SOPs should be accessible during working hours without interruption. Hard copies should be available at a manageable location so that the SOPs are available when the electronic system is down.
