Lubricating bolts

Adequate lubrication should be used. Nonlubricated bolting has an efficiency of about 50% of a well-lubricated bolt. For standard applications, a heavy graphite and oil mixture works well. For high temperature service (500 F to 1000°F), a high temperature thread compound may be used.

If the friction is reduced, the required bolt tension will be obtained at a lower assembly torque.

The contents of chemical munitions may also be under pressure and liquid agent can spray as they are opened. Other problems encountered by some have included seized bolts and the problem that lubricants used to unseize the bolts must be used in a manner that does not interfere with CW agent monitoring equipment. Equipment used to open munitions, such as pneumatic wrenches and saw pipe cutters, must be used with care, especially in cases where the munitions still have their fuses attached. 

Problems can arise if thread friction is unknown - for example when the bolt has been cleaned or coated with an aerobic adhesive. In an extreme situation the use of an adhesive with a sufficiently different lubricating effect to machine oil could result in a given torque generating insufficient clamping force. The clamped parts might move under severe vibration even though the fastener itself would not loosen.
