Administration of 5 ppm barium, the acetate, to mice in the drinking water in a life-time study had no observable effects on longevity, mortality, and body weights, or on the incidence of tumors (53). Long-term studies in rats exposed to Ba " in drinking water containing 5 mg/L, as acetate, or 10—250 mg/L, as chloride, resulted in no measurable toxic effects (47). 

In turf apphcations, SCU, with or without wax sealant, provides improved safety and longevity over urea. This is shown ia Figure 5 which rates the quahty of Kentucky bluegrass with time after being treated with 2 lb N/1000 sq ft (9.76 g/m ) of urea and two types of SCU. In this particular test, a quahty rating of 3 or less is acceptable. Urea provided acceptable turf quahty for 11 weeks, whereas the two SCU products (37% nitrogen) gave quahty turf for 16 weeks. 

The Osmocote product line is based on coating prilled N—P—K fertilizers. Product longevities range from 5 to 16 months, depending on the temperature. The Osmocote line also kicludes a coated N—P—K miniprill which lasts 2—3 months.
