Longevity clinical results

Pharmacotherapies contribute greatly to human health and longevity. As such, researchers in the public and private sectors make an enormous investment in drug design and refinement and preclinical and clinical testing. Such efforts often result in a marketed compound that expands the options for the treatment and prevention of human diseases. However, on rare occasions, medications associated with adverse effects - ranging from undesirable to potentially fatal - that greatly reduce or even eliminate their therapeutic utility reach the marketplace. [Pg.143]

In cattle, fluorosis can take the form of intermittent lameness (Figure 8.4) as well as stiffness and lesions of the bones and teeth. The clinical basis for the lameness is not well understood. Appetite is normally impaired and this may result in decreased weight gain, cachexia, and lowered milk yield. Decline in milk production may be secondary to appetite impairment or other responses. Evidence that animals may be suffering chronic F effect may be obtained from chemical analysis of the feed and elevated levels of F in urine and body tissues (Parker et al. 1979). Other effects include increased susceptibility to other environmental stresses and decrease in longevity. [Pg.210]

The evidence from laboratory, clinical, and epidemiological studies that diet affects immune function is compelling, although precise recommendations of dietary choices for optimum health and longevity cannot yet be stated. In part, this situation results from complex and sometimes contradictory data. Some of reasons for these difficulties may- be summarized as follows. [Pg.65]

DIAGNOSIS OF MINERAL DEFICIENCIES. There are various degrees of mineral deficiencies, ranging from a mild depletion of the body s stores of the mineralfs), to severe clinical disorders which may result in disability or even death. Hence, it may be possible to improve health and increase longevity if mineral malnutrition is detected early by means such as those which follow ... [Pg.736]
