In the mid-seventies, G. D. Brewer and R. E. Morris of the Lockheed California Company performed a study for NASA Langley Research Center to define the characteristics of a hydrogen fueled commercial airliner. This comparison was performed for airplanes with short, medium, and long ranges, carrying 130,200, and 400 passengers respectively. Table 7.3 shows the results of this study. [Pg.150]

Each of these laboratories is a government-owned/contractor-operated facility selected from industiy, academia, and university consortia. As of 1999, the most prominent civilian contractor was Lockheed Martin, the operator of Oak Ridge and Sandia, and the major academic institution was the University of California, administrator of Los Alamos, Lawi ence Berkeley, and Lawi ence Livermore. [Pg.813]

In 1991, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration program evaluated the AquaDetox/SVE system. The demonstration took place at the San Fernando Valley Groundwater Basin Superfund site in Burbank, California. Based on this demonstration, cost estimates for a full-scale deployment of the system were prepared. Three treatment flow rates were evaluated, based on the 1200-gallon-per-minute (gpm) system used at the Lockheed site 500, 1000, and 3000 gpm. Capital costs and annual operational and maintenance (O M) costs were estimated in 1991 dollars and are shown in Table 1. [Pg.900]

A detailed breakdown of specific costs is available on page 22 of D104552. Monthly operating costs at the Lockheed site in Burbank, California, were estimated to be 30,700. This translates to a unit cost of 0.71 per 1000 gal of influent treated (D104552, p. 41). Steam at the Lockheed site cost about 14,700 per month antiscaling chemicals cost 1800 per month and the system used approximately 4200 of electricity per month. Labor costs varied, as progressively fewer personnel were needed to operate and maintain the system (D11229Y, p. 599). [Pg.900]

The problem arose because two teams working on the Mars mission were using different sets of units. NASA s scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, assumed that the thrust data for the rockets on the Orbiter they received from Lockheed Martin Astronautics in Denver, which built the spacecraft, were in metric units. In reality, the units were English. As a result the Orbiter dipped 100 kilometers lower into the Mars atmosphere than planned and the friction from the atmosphere caused the craft to burn up. [Pg.8]

Why do scientists wony about units The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently was reminded of just why keeping track of units is so important. In 1999 a 125 million satellite was lost in the atmosphere of Mars because scientists made some improper assumptions about units. NASA s scientists at the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, California, received thrust data from the satellite s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Denver, Colorado. Unfortunately, the Denver scientists used American units in their measurements and the JPL scientists assumed the units were metric. This mistake caused the sateUite to fall 100 km lower into the Mars atmosphere than planned. The spacecraft burned up from the friction with the atmosphere. [Pg.27]
