Local Research Networks

It is anticipated that the funding available from the MCRN to support the local research networks (LRNs) will be in the region of 500 000 per annum. These resources will provide some of the managerial, administrative and service support costs to support high-quality multicentre studies within the MCRN. [Pg.82]

Light wave technologies provide a number of special challenges for polymeric materials. Polymer fibers offer the best potential for optical communications in local area network (LAN) applications, because their large core size makes it relatively cheap to attach connectors to them. There is a need for polymer fibers that have low losses and that can transmit the bandwidths needed for LAN applications the aciylate and methacrylate polymers now under study have poor loss and bandwidth performance. Research on monomer purification, polymerization to precise molecular-size distributions, and weU-controlled drawing processes is relevant here. There is also a need for precision plastic molding processes for mass prodnction of optical fiber connectors and splice hardware. A tenfold reduction in the cost of fiber and related devices is necessaiy to make the utilization of optical fiber and related devices economical for local area networks and tlie telecommunications loop. [Pg.68]

The chemical industry is tied to its local innovation network. The ability to recruit the brightest people, as well as to draw on valuable academic research, actually strengthens the university sector, which itself is concerned with excellence in training and research. [Pg.51]

The biochemists are most likely to be working with one of the three types of computers personal computer (PC), notebook or handheld computer (Becker et al, 2(X)1 Tsai, 2002), although workstations with improved capacity, computing speed and other added facilities are used in dedicated research laboratories and networked internally to form a local area network (LAN). A computer system (Mueller, 2005 Meyers and Jemigan, 2004 Weber, 2004) consists of internal and external devices. Inside a computer system box (chassis) is ... [Pg.533]

In the early days of computer networking in the United States, most research done at universities and companies was government related. In spite of this, considerable computer network research was done, especially for local area networks. European universities did considerable research in basic network theory and applications, with the development of token-ring networks in English universities being a prime example. [Pg.422]

Support for small groups and teams became a major focus of research and development when local area networks became widespread. Research into group... [Pg.700]

The process of formulating proposals for attracting internationally oriented research funds in the fields of information technology and environmental sciences has attained a considerable success The estabUshment of the Lebanese Academic and Research Network (LARN) is almost at its final stages, a step that will enhance and facilitate local researeh and academic cooperation among the different instimtions ... [Pg.81]

The space-frequency localization of wavelets has lead other researchers as well (Pati, 1992 Zhang and Benveniste, 1992) in considering their use in a NN scheme. In their schemes, however, the determination of the network involves the solution of complicated optimization problem where not only the coefficients but also the wavelet scales and positions in the input space are unknown. Such an approach evidently defies the on-line character of the learning problem and renders any structural adaptation procedure impractical. In that case, those networks suffer from all the deficiencies of NNs for which the network structure is a static decision. [Pg.186]

For the Paris and the London-Manchester schools, the local culture, educational tradition, laboratory research programs, theoretical systems, and personal networks that helped forge a school identity and a disciplinary identity are worked out in some detail. In addition to constructing an account of a new branch of theoretical chemistry, focused on organic reaction mechanisms, these chapters suggest important differences in national traditions within the disciplinary field of physical organic chemistry. [Pg.28]

The Major Accident Reporting System (MARS) is a distributed information network, consisting of 15 local databases on a MS-Windows platform in each Member State of the European Union and a central UNIX-based analysis system at the European Commission s Joint Research Centre in Ispra (MAHB) that allows complex text retrieval and pattern analysis. [Pg.285]
