Token Ring

Today, coaxial cable with baseband transmission is the most frequently used technique in implementations of LANs, in Ethernet LANs as well as in token ring networks. Transmission rates are mostly between 6 and 16 Mbits/s. Interfacing to coaxial cable is rather simple, especially with Ethernet new nodes can be connected to an existing cable without interrupting the operation of the network.

The type of network interface used on the printer depends on the type of network the printer is being attached to. For example, if you re using a Token Ring network, the printer should have a Token Ring interface. 

We will focus on the two predominant 802 models that existing network architectures have been based on 802.3 CSMA/CD and 802.5 Token Ring. 

The main advantage of the token-passing access method over contention (the 802.3 model) is that it eliminates collisions. Only workstations that have the token can transmit. It would seem that this technology has a lot of overhead and would be slow. But remember that this whole procedure takes place in a few milliseconds. This technology scales very well. It is not uncommon for Token Ring networks based on the IEEE 802.5 standard to reach hundreds of workstations on a single ring. 

Network architectures define the structure of the network, including hardware, software, and layout. We differentiate each architecture by the hardware and software required to maintain optimum performance levels. The major architectures in use today are Ethernet, Token Ring, ARCNet, and AppleTalk. 

Another interesting point about AppleTalk is that it s fairly simple. Most Macintosh computers already include AppleTalk, so it is relatively inexpensive. It will assign itself an address. In its first revision (Phase I), it allowed a maximum of 32 devices on a network. With its second revision (Phase II), it supports faster speeds and multiple networks with EtherTalk and TokenTalk. EtherTalk allows AppleTalk network protocols to run on Ethernet coaxial cable (used for Mac II and above). TokenTalk allows the AppleTalk protocol to run on a Token Ring network. 

In order to successfully send data on the network, you need to make sure the network cards are of the same type (i.e., all Ethernet, all Token Ring, all ARCNet, etc.) and they are connected to the same piece of cable. If you use cards of different types (for example, one Ethernet and one Token Ring), neither of them will be able to communicate with the other (unless you use some kind of gateway device, such as a router). 

Configuring a NIC is similar to configuring any other type of expansion card. The NIC usually needs a unique IRQ channel and TO address, and possibly a DMA channel. Token Ring cards often have two memory addresses that must be excluded in reserved memory to work properly. 

Repeaters operate at the physical layer of the OSI model. Because of this, repeaters can only be used to regenerate signals between similar network segments. I can, for example, extend an Ethernet lOBasel network to 400 meters with a repeater. But I can t connect an Ethernet and Token Ring network together with one.

Token Ring will be important. During this period of non-compliance , bridges and gateways will provide the necessary functionality between heterogeneous systems. 

In the early days of computer networking in the United States, most research done at universities and companies was government related. In spite of this, considerable computer network research was done, especially for local area networks. European universities did considerable research in basic network theory and applications, with the development of token-ring networks in English universities being a prime example. 

Fiber for horizontal applications is a reality because of the recent advances in the technology easing installation, reducing the overall system cost, and offering a system that is rehable, flexible, certifiable, and future proofed. Fiber horizontal systems can be implemented for today s network requirements, such as ethernet and token ring, and can easily accommodate growth to higher speed networks such as FDDI, ATM, fiber channel, and beyond. There is no concern that crosstalk, EMI/RFI, and FCC issues will be uncovered when frequencies are increased.
