As Rosales and co-workers noted [48 ], vast amounts of chemical dyes (around 10 tons) are made annually worldwide [ 49]. Dye-containing effluents can make their way into runoff and wastewater, eventually settling in the soil. As these workers noted [48], with textile industries, as much as 50% of the dyes can be lost and disposed in effluents [50]. These dyes can have adverse effects on the environment and ecosystems they pollute. Previous extraction methods have had limited success in removal from soil, and a recent approach involved the use of Fenton s reagent with electrochemistry [48] testing removal of Lissamine Green (Figure 9) from a pseudo-soil matrix (kaolin). [Pg.138]

Lissamine green (SF 150 I.C.I. light green or lichtgriin FS) introduced by Griffiths (G18) has been used by several authors (Al, Cla, Dl, D9, 04) and is read at about 600 mp. The solution is made up with 200 mg of dye per 100ml in 3 % (w/v) aqueous sulfosalicylic acid (D9). More dilute solutions have also been proposed, and it has been claimed that the protein factor was equal to 1 for all proteins (Cl). This dye is, however, a complex mixture and is different from batch to batch (H7). It is easily eluted in 40 % acetic acid (04). [Pg.54]

For bromophenol blue elution is very easy. It is, on the other hand, a cause of error during the rinsing procedure where dye is easily lost. For this dye and also for bromocresol green (F5), azocarmine (K19, V2), and lissamine green (Cla), alkaline eluates are the most suitable. In contact lens wear it has become apparent that conjunctival staining in general is related to symptoms of irritation and that lissamine green in particular may be more specific compared with fluorescein for those with symptoms. [Pg.291]
