Pinolenic acid (5c,9c,12c-18 3) occurs generally in the seed oils of coniferous trees, such as Korean pine. The seed oil has been shown to be an inhibitor of linoleic acid metabolism (17). Consumption of this oil results in a reduction of tissue levels of eicosanoids in rats (17).

These results suggest that the presence in the diet of unsaturated fats increase tocopherol requirements to 10 to 100 times the amounts required in their absence. In the prevention of encephalomalacia in chicks it appears that the role of tocopherol is to act as an antioxidant specifically related to linoleic acid metabolism (Scott, 1962). Whether such specificity of action can explain the results obtained with ruminants seems doubtful, in view of the low linoleic acid content of highly unsaturated fraction of cod liver oil.

Unsaturated fatty acids are probably the most abundant oxidizable endogenous substrates. In the past it was erroneously believed that unsaturated fatty acids are just products of lipid peroxidation. Now, it has been shown that they have dietary origin. Family of unsaturated fatty acids includes linoleic (Ci8), arachidonic (C2o), docosahexaenoic (C22), and other fatty acids containing two, three, four, five, or six double bonds. Some acids can be in vivo converted into others for example, linoleic acid can be metabolized to linolenic and eicosa-trienoic acids [78].

Experts are not sure how melatonin influences the development of cancer. A recent study published in 1999 in Cancer Research suggests that melatonin may help to starve cancer cells. Tumors use a type of fat called linoleic acid as a food source. Melatonin prevented the tumor cells in rats from being able to metabolize linoleic, but only when it was given to rats during the late afternoon. When it was given to the rats earlier in the day it did not have any effect.
