Perhaps it would be simplest to begin by stating the ways in which this new edition, the fourth under the aegis of the present editor, has not been changed. It remains the one-volume source of factual information for chemists, both professionals and students—the first place in which to look it up on the spot. The aim is to provide sufficient data to satisfy all one s general needs without recourse to other reference sources. Even the worker with the facilities of a comprehensive library will find this volume of value as a time-saver because of the many tables of numerical data which have been especially compiled. [Pg.1286]

Depression, we are told over and over again, is a brain disease, a chemical imbalance that can be adjusted by antidepressant medication. In an informational brochure issued to inform the public about depression, the US National Institute for Mental Health tells people that depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain and adds that important neurotransmitters - chemicals that brain cells use to communicate - appear to be out of balance . This view is so widespread that it was even proffered by the editors of PLoS [Public Library of Science] Medicine in their summary that accompanied our article. Depression, they wrote, is a serious medical illness caused by imbalances in the brain chemicals that regulate mood , and they went on to say that antidepressants are supposed to work by correcting these imbalances. [Pg.81]

The modeling of the plant, the chemical processes, and the production plan can be performed entirely in a graphical manner using three editors, the recipe editor, the plant editor and the production plan editor. A fourth editor is available for the definition and update of a physical properties library. The physical properties library is required to parameterize the models of the plant and of the recipes for the calculation of state changes during the processing steps in simulation. [Pg.39]

The ultimate purpose of a type model is to support the action specs — expect to add to it, and eventually to drop parts as irrelevant. So for a drawing-editor, we might add the idea of a current selection. For a library management system, we might drop the business model s Librarian-Librarian supervises link, since the actions expected of the system never use it. [Pg.619]

There are several people I would like to thank regarding the creation of this book. The library staff at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey and Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ has been indispensable with their assistance in research. The editors and staff at MTT Press have also been extremely helpful in guiding me through the process of publishing a book. [Pg.10]
