Detailed procedures will only be required in unusual situations where the usual rules of thumb do not apply and the worker is likely to be in the knowledge-based mode. In Chapter 4, and case study 3 in Chapter 7, a systematic framework for developing procedures, in which their format and content is based on a detailed analysis of the tasks to be performed and the normal skill level of the person who will perform the tasks, will be described. 

Even though the domain in which an ES is applied may be clearly defined, the contents of the knowledge base may extend a little beyond the immediate... 

The contents of a knowledge base, the facts and rules, or heuristics about a problem will be discussed shortly. The problem-solving and inference engine is the component of the system that allows rules and logic to be applied to facts in the knowledge base. For example, in rule-based expert systems, "IF-THEN" rules (production rules) in a knowledge base may be analyzed in two ways ... 

The Knowledge Base. The knowledge base holds symbolic knowledge. To be sure, the knowledge base can also contain tables of numbers, ranges of numerical values, and some numerical procedures where appropriate. But the major content consists of facts and heuristics. 

For those clinicians who have in their possession early editions of this book, I invite you to compare your copy to the 4th edition as validation for the assertions made in this Foreword. We have not compromised the comprehensive nature of this volume in favor of a simpler approach to understanding pharmacology. We believe that the topic, by its very nature and from the implications inherent in its knowledge base, requires a comprehensive, yet user-friendly, delivery. This belief system remains unhindered in this latest edition yet the problem-solving and evidence-based nature of the content is preserved and enhanced.
