Michael Neve in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography gives the date of Beddoes s appointment as Reader as Spring 1788 but Beddoes styled himself Reader in his memorial on the state of the Bodleain Library, printed and issued in 1787. His lectures were not only on chemistry, but also on the closely related discipline of mineralogy, and on the theory of the earth, which in the late eighteenth century was enlivened by the conflict between the theories of Werner and Hutton. [Pg.173]

Once the peaks have been collected and stored, the computer can be asked to work on the data to produce a mass spectrum and print it out, or it can be asked to carry out other operations such as library searching, producing a mass chromatogram, and making an accurate mass measurement on each peak. Many other examples of the use of computers to process mass data are presented in other chapters of this book. [Pg.320]

GORE. The CORE Electronic Chemistry Library is a joint project of Cornell University, OCLC (On-line Computer Library Center), Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), and the American Chemical Society. The CORE database will contain the full text of American Chemical Society Journals from 1980, associated information from Chemical Abstracts Service, and selected reference texts. It will provide machine-readable text that can be searched and displayed, graphical representations of equations and figures, and full-page document images. The project will examine the performance obtained by the use of a traditional printed index as compared with a hypertext system (SUPERBOOK) and a document retrieval system (Pixlook) (6,116). [Pg.131]

Information on laboratory safety is available from many places. The public library usually has material on federal, state, and local safety regulations. The Index to Books in Print, also available at libraries, lists all material published by subject, author, and title. Scientific book publishers will be glad to add new names to their mailing lists for announcements of new publications on safety. [Pg.38]

Due to its modularity, the software comes in many parts (shown in Fig. 9). The Chemkin package is composed of four important pieces the Interpreter, the Thermodynamic Data Base, the Linking File, and the Gas-Phase Subroutine Library. The Interpreter is a program that first reads the user s symbolic description of the reaction mechanism. It then extracts thermodynamic information for the species involved from the Thermodynamic Data Base. The user may add to or modify the information in the data base by input to the Interpreter. In addition to printed output, the Interpreter writes a Linking File, which contains all the pertinent information on the elements, species, and reactions in the mechanism. [Pg.348]
