Leucocyte count

Leoko-phan, m. leucophane. -plast, n. (a kind of) adhesive plaster, -verbindung, /. leuco compound. -zyt, n. (Physiol.) leucocyte, -zytenzahl, /. leucocyte count, -zytose, /. leucocytosis. 

While hemoglobin adduct formation does not imply altered or abnormal hemoglobin function, adduct formation may be a suitable biomarker of human exposure to 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine (see Section 2.7). Hematological variables (erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, and leucocyte count) were found to be normal in dogs exposed to 10.4 mg/kg/day 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine for 7 years (Stula et al. 1978).

Retinitis pigmentosa and agranulocytosis are rare idiosyncratic reactions. During treatment with clozapine leucocyte counts should be carried out frequently, especially the first few month, as there is a considerable risk of agranulocytosis. 

Hematological Effects. A report on 5 individuals (3 males, 2 females) who intentionally ingested 60-180 mb of 25% diazinon solution (estimated to deliver a dose of 240-400 mg/kg for males and 509-986 mg/kg for females) found that leucocyte counts (3,700, 95% polymorphonuclear), hemoglobin (16.3 g), and hematocrit (47) were all within normal ranges (Klemmer et al. 1978). 

One day after the operation the leucocyte count both in treated and untreated animals increased by 4000—50006s On the 5th day the leucocyte count of the animals treated with silatrane ointments reduced to 9000 500. The leucocyte count of the animals treated with Vishnevsky ointment, synthomycin emulsion and cygerol reduced to 10800 100, 10200 300 and 10000 200, respectively. The leucocyte count of the untreated animals was 11000 100 5 days after the operation. The leucocyte count of the silatrane-treated animals was normal after 15 days, i. e. by the time of complete healing of the wound, in the untreated animals not even after 20 days. 

Usually an iatrogenic state in which the white blood cell count is less than 2000/cu.mm and the leucocyte count is less than 500/cu.mm.

In a chronic-exposure feeding study, mild anemia and an increased leucocyte count were observed in rats given uranyl nitrate hexahydrate doses corresponding to 33 mg U/kg/day for 2 years (Maynard and Hodge 1949 Maynard et al. 1953). 

For leukemic forms no interrelation was found between metabolite abnormality and behavior of the peripheral blood picture. In 4 cases with chronic myeloid leukemia, a tremendous increase in the leucocyte counts (300,000 in one subject) did not correspond to any abnormal excretion. Kynurenine excretion is, however, frequently increased in patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia, which is related to the malignant lymphogranuloma through the same genesis of the lymphoreticular matrix. 

No studies were located regarding hematological effects in animals following chronic-duration oral exposure to stable strontium. In adult Wistar rats given up to 110 mg strontium/kg/day as strontium chloride in the diet for 2 weeks, the total number of erythrocytes was slightly elevated in both sexes, and the leucocyte count was slightly elevated in males at the highest dose level at termination (Kroes et al. 1977). 

An evaluation of changes in erythrocyte and leucocyte count showed that DCPE and MCPE considerably increased the erythrocyte-count, while DCPE considerably reduced the granulocyte count. 

Toxicity of heparin and heparinoids has been examined in considerable detail from the standpoint of immediate and long-term toxicity. Initial and long-term toxicity of heparinoids is relatively slight with the initial material before sulphonation, but the introduction of sulphuric acid groups into the polysaccharide results in considerable toxicity. Twelve heart transplant patients were given ticlopidine 250 mg twice daily. The mean whole blood trough ciclosporin levels were noted to be halved but the mean ciclosporin dosage was not altered over a 3-month period. The neutrophil, platelet and whole blood leucocyte counts and haemoglobin levels were not significantly altered, but adverse effects included epistaxis (1 patient), haematuria (1 patient), which both necessitated a 50% dosage reduction, and neutropenia (1 patient), which resolved when the ticlopidine was withdrawn. ... 

Low levels of serum folate are often associated with low levels of erythrocyte folate (intracellular). The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of erythrocytes may increase slightly with low folate levels, though overt macrocytic anaemia occurs infrequently. Carbamazepine (CBZ) therapy may cause leukopenia and neutropenia. In a randomized trial in patients on CBZ, subjects on folic acid had higher leucocyte counts and less neutropenia compared with subjects without vitamin supplements. Other studies found no connection between folate and AED-induced haematological abnormalities.
