Legal s reaction

It is quite impossible to ignore Legal s reaction when we deal with the use of Fe + and Fe " " in organic analysis. Legal s reaction is characteristic of a-methylene ketones or aldehydes. It involves nitroprusside ion as reagent. The reaction is carried out in alkaline medium, sodium hydroxide, ammoniac solution, ethylenedi-amine, piperidine, piperazine, sodium tetraborate, and sodium carbonate or hydrogen carbonate. 

In analytical biochemistry, urinary ketonic derivatives may be detected by using Legal s reaction according to Rothero s experiment. Pathological dimethylketone is first salted out from urine by ammonium sulfate. A violet color develops with nitroprusside in ammonia. 

This is one of the purity assays to which it must be submitted. It is interesting to note that in this particular case, it is not Legal s reaction that occurs. It is rather an exchange reaction of nitroxyl ligand with the p-aminophenol rest ... 

When it can be carried out. Legal s reaction is quasi-systematically used for quantitative analysis by absorption measurements. 

Mono- and polyl dric phenols and enols frequently form characteristically colored complexes with Fe + ions [4, 28, 29]. Here monohydric phenols usually produce reddish-violet colors, while pyrocatechol derivatives yield green chelates [4]. Detection of acetone using Legal s test is based on the formation of an iron complex [4]. The same applies to the thioglycolic acid reaction of the German Pharmacopoeia (DAB 9) [4, 30]. 

Stout prisms from dil ale. Indistinct melting range 155-183". [a]jjf —223" (c = 2.3 in chloroform), uv max (ethanol) 309 nm (log e 1.94). Freely sol in chloroform slightly sol in ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride. Practically insol in water. Positive Legal s test. The Keller reaction produces a brilliant yellow band with diginigenin.

In case of adverse reaction, get medical help. Yohimbe is legal, so it s no bust to see a doctor. Sodium amytal is the best antidote for yohimbe poisoning, but let a physician do it. Self-administration of barbs during a panic is mighty dangerous. Most people overdo it. 

Summary RDX is conveniently prepared by adding 1,3,5-tripropionylhexahydro-s-triazine to 99% nitric acid at moderate temperature. Thereafter, the reaction mixture is stirred at 70 Celsius for a short period, and the RDX precipitate then collected by filtration. The precipitate is then washed and dried.
