The resins used are polymers and copolymers of the esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids. They range in physical properties from soft elastomers to hard plastics, and are used in cementitious compounds in much the same manner as SBR latex. Acrylics are reported to have better UV stability than SBR latex and therefore remain flexible under exterior exposure conditions longer than SBR latex [88]. [Pg.347]

Acrylics. There are two principal dasses of acrylic sealants latex acrylics and solvent-rdease acrylics. [Pg.312]

Future developments are likely to feature the production of more silicone sealants that do not pick up dirt, more latex acrylic sealants that have high performance properties, urethanes that have improved uv stability, and high performance polysulfides that are made in the United States. [Pg.315]

Acrylics. There are two principal classes of acrylic sealants latex acrylics and solvent-release actylics. High molecular weight latex acrylic polymers are prepared by emulsion polymerization of alkyl esters of acrylic acid, The emulsion polymers are compounded inlo sealants by adding fillers, plasticizers, freeze-thaw stabilizers, thickeners, and adhesion promoters. As is true of the silicone lalex sealants, die acrylic latex sealants are easy to apply and clean with water. [Pg.1463]

High quality, conventional sealants (118) will dominate the industries in the 80 s. Energy-efficient, water-proof, and durable sealants will be in demand by the construction and automotive industries. Commonly used sealants are polysulfides, polyurethanes, silicones, oil-based caulks, butyls, and solvent or latex acrylics. However, judged by their performances and durability (Table 3), the first three will be the most important sealants for this decade. [Pg.39]

Polymer emulsions, such as styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR latex), acrylics, polyvinylalcohol, polyvinylacetate and vinyl-acrylics are used in the manufacture of a wide variety of products. Approximately 70% of the polymer emulsions are applied in four major end uses ... [Pg.463]

Industrial glass microfibre papers are made from fibres that are longer and have a smaller diameter (from <0.5 pm to >4 pm) than cellulose fibres, and the paper mat requires strengthening by the inclusion of a binder. Typical binders are latex, acrylic polymers or polyvinyl alcohol. Typical mean pore sizes are between about 3 pm and 30 pm. [Pg.110]

It has been postulated (3) that polar but uncharged functional groups of the monomer units orient themselves in the polymer-water interface so as to improve the stability of the latex. Acrylate esters are cited as examples of this type, e.g., the methyl ester gives a higher degree of orientation in the interface and a lesser adsorption of conventional emulsifier than the n-butyl ester. This concept has not yet been demonstrated for a wide variety of monomers, but offers a means of explaining hitherto unexplained latex stability data. [Pg.6]

Bentonite thickening agents are used in various water based adhesives, caulks and sealants including those based on proteins and starch, polyvinyl acetate emulsions, natural rubber latexes, acrylic emulsions, neoprene emulsions, butyl emulsions, nitrile emulsions, and SBR emulsions. [Pg.338]
