Vinyl acetate-acrylic latex, viscosity

Recent investigations have shown that the behavior and interactions of surfactants in a polyvinyl acetate latex are quite different and complex compared to that in a polystyrene latex (1, 2). Surfactant adsorption at the fairly polar vinyl acetate latex surface is generally weak (3,4) and at times shows a complex adsorption isotherm (2). Earlier work (5,6) has also shown that anionic surfactants adsorb on polyvinyl acetate, then slowly penetrate into the particle leading to the formation of a poly-electroyte type solubilized polymer-surfactant complex. Such a solubilization process is generally accompanied by an increase in viscosity. The first objective of this work is to better under-stand the effects of type and structure of surfactants on the solubilization phenomena in vinyl acetate and vinyl acetate-butyl acrylate copolymer latexes. [Pg.226]

Pentachlorophenyl acrylate, (1), was terpolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (nBA) (Scheme III) to give a latex containing 537 solids and a pll of 4.7 which was adjusted to 6.8 by adding aqueous NaOH. The latex was stable up to pH =10. A small aliquot vzas coagulated and the resulting polymer purified. Its intrinsic viscosity was 3.1 /g and analysis indicated 2 mole percent (1), 587 CIA and 40" nBA. Similar terpolyner latices were prepared from acrylates (2) and (3) (Scheme III). Another terpolymer latex made from (3), vinyl acetate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate contained 547 solids. Tliese latices and their compositions are summarized in the Table 1 and a sample experimental procedure is given in the experimental section. [Pg.40]

A series of latex copolymers were prepared using a typical emulsion polymerization recipe and procedure only the monomer composition was varied. The control composition (80/20 vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate) is similar to that used for interior latex paint. Table V lists the compositions and properties of the latexes. Percent solids, pH, and particle size are similar for all the latexes. Viscosity varies somewhat, but is within limits for this type of latex. The only unreacted monomer detected was the vinyl acetate. Thus, the incorporation of VEC into the emulsion polymerization via the monomer mixture did not affect the latex synthesis. The Tg and minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) of the latexes increase with increasing VEC content, which is expected based on the previous results. [Pg.311]
